Re: [deafnessandhearingloss] Re: Tina, everyone else: Check this out, it is sick!

I know Tina, but it still amazes me.  I would never have chosen to lose my hearing, even though I am continually adapting to it.  I wouldn't wish it for anyone.  My daughter (who is almost 13 now) was very upset at age 8 when she passed her hearing test.  She cried and said she wanted hearing aids like mom, but once we talked she understood that it is better to have good hearing.  She can be like mom is so many other ways.

Wow!

Do you remember the Deaf lesbian couple a few years ago who
deliberately chose a genetically deaf man for atificial
insemination, to ensure that their child would be born deaf?

I think that many hearing people recognize that how rich Deaf
culture is, and they want to be part of something coherent and rich
like that. I think it is the same impulse, though, that leads people
to become Trekkies--a general sense of alienation combined with the
desire to be part of something larger than themselves that has its
own special language, styles, etc.
