RE: [deafnessandhearingloss] Drastic change in hearing - advice needed

Dodie- I think Alea's advice sounds good; she's had a lot of experience with ear infections. I just had two things to add. One is that if your stapes prosthesis is helping at all, and you have inner ear pressure, perhaps the pressure has displaced your prosthesis even more than usual. The other is that if you are on the antibiotic and it's not helping, it's possible that whatever is causing the ear infection is resistant to the antibiotic you are taking, or that you have a fungal infection instead of a bacterial one, in which case Amoxicillin isn't going to help. I'm not a doctor either, but I think that if it hasn't started to get better within a few days of starting the antibiotic, you probably need to be seen again.

I really hope you're better soon.
-Andrea

Ok, I have 3 kids who all have this cold.  They decide to share with
me.  For the first week it is just a cold.  On Thursday, my ears
start
hurting.  I go to the doctor on Friday, just a regular GP.  I have
ear
infections.  OK, so I get the antibiotics and some eardrops for the
excruciating pain.

I use the eardrops in my right ear, but not my left because I need to
have my hearing aid in.  Friday night I use the drops in my left ear
so
I can sleep.  When I put my hearing aid in on Saturday, I noticed my
hearing is very muffled.  I have a conductive loss to begin with and
now
almost all the low tones are hard to hear.  Higher pitches, like my
kids voices, are painful.

I am taking the antibiotics (Amoxicillin) and don't feel like my
ears
are getting better.  I tried popping my ears to equalize the pressure
and it hurt so bad I was in tears.  It made the sounds less muffled
for
about 5 minutes and then they became muffled again.

Anyone ever experience anything like this before.  I cannot afford
another doctor appointment, but can't take a chance of losing any
more
hearing.  I am hoping this loss is only temporary.  I didn't wear my
aids
almost all weekend.  I cannot hear without them and it was quite an
experience having to function without sound.  I am not ready to be
there
yet, it was pretty depressing and scary.
