Dodie,
Of course, I'm not sure what's going on either with your ears, but I
can sure understand how worried you must be. I would guess that maybe
you have got a lot of fluid in your middle ears and that's what's
causing your hearing to be so muffled. Is the pain going away at all?
Any drainage from your ear canals or anything like that? Was the
doctor specific as to whether this is a middle ear infection or is the
infection limited to your ear canals? I used to get ear canal
infections frequently and they are very painful and scary, especially
when you've already had ear surgeries in the past and things like that.
Is there any chance that if it's not better in the next day or two that
you could go back to your doctor and maybe they would charge only a
very minimal office visit fee or something? As I remember, it used to
take several days for the antibiotics and eardrops to really kick in
and start making a noticeable difference, but I would think that after
three or four days of medication you should be beginning to notice some
improvement. They can be pretty stubborn to treat.
Please let us know how you're doing, okay? I hope you're feeling
better and hearing better by the time you get this. If you can take
ibuprofen, it should help with both pain and inflammation (keeping in
mind I'm not a doctor or anything, but it sure helped me!).
Take care,
Alea

Subject: [deafnessandhearingloss] Drastic change in hearing - advice
needed
Ok, I have 3 kids who all have this cold. They decide to share with
me. For the first week it is just a cold. On Thursday, my ears
start
hurting. I go to the doctor on Friday, just a regular GP. I have
ear
infections. OK, so I get the antibiotics and some eardrops for the
excruciating pain.
I use the eardrops in my right ear, but not my left because I need to
have my hearing aid in. Friday night I use the drops in my left ear
so
I can sleep. When I put my hearing aid in on Saturday, I noticed my
hearing is very muffled. I have a conductive loss to begin with and
now
almost all the low tones are hard to hear. Higher pitches, like my
kids voices, are painful.
I am taking the antibiotics (Amoxicillin) and don't feel like my
ears
are getting better. I tried popping my ears to equalize the pressure
and it hurt so bad I was in tears. It made the sounds less muffled
for
about 5 minutes and then they became muffled again.
Anyone ever experience anything like this before. I cannot afford
another doctor appointment, but can't take a chance of losing any
more
hearing. I am hoping this loss is only temporary. I didn't wear my
aids
almost all weekend. I cannot hear without them and it was quite an
experience having to function without sound. I am not ready to be
there
yet, it was pretty depressing and scary.
