Greetings, The DC Psychiatric Society is holding a competition among the DC area psychiatric residents for our new chapter logo. Design the winning logo you will receive a $250 gift certificate for Kinkead's Restaurant! The DC Psychiatric society is the Washington DC branch of the Washington Psychiatric Society (WPS). The WPS is a medical specialty organization composed of approximately 1,000 physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses, including substance abuse disorders. WPS covers the National Capital Area with regional chapters representing the District of Columbia, Suburban Maryland (Montgomery and Prince George�s Counties) and Northern Virginia (Alexandria City, Arlington, Fairfax and Loudon Counties), and is affiliated with the internationally recognized American Psychiatric Association (APA). Several of our chapter highlights are: ؠ�� DC Psychiatric Society Founded WPS in 1949. ؠ�� Credo- Pursuit of Excellence, Social Justice, and sharing good times together. In those days African Americans and Caucasians could not meet in DC. The only place they could meet was at a National Airport restaurant. Ours may have been one of the very few integrated professional societies in the late 1940's-1950's. ؠ�� Members of our DC group established the GWU Psychiatry Department in the late 1950's. ؠ�� Together with DC Advocates passed the John Ray Act in DC Council in 1986 - first parity and nondiscrimination�piece of legislation in the nation regarding mental illness. ؠ�� In 1988 DC Psychiatry President and Al Golub, WPS ED met persuaded APA to bill $45.00 for our Society, agreed to by our DC Psychiatry Council to develop a DC specific kitty for mental health policy and other DC initiatives. We were building on the momentum of the John Ray Act success. ؠ�� Became known as DC Psychiatric Society in 1989-1990 (during Eliot Sorel�s second term as DC Psychiatry�President) ؠ�� Outstanding Contributions to the Practice of Psychiatry Award given annually since 1989. Among those who received it, Senators Domenici & Wellstone for the 1996 Parity Amendment (N.B.�A full ten years after the John Ray Act passed in DC). ؠ�� Annually, in June we have a Presidents' Awards Celebration, passing the baton from one to the next President of DC Psychiatry and present the Outstanding Contributions to the Practice of Psychiatry. The awardees� could be virtually anyone deemed worthy. Over the years it included Policymakers, a Southeast DC Clergy, a leading African American businessman, an NIMH leader and others. It had a jury led by Ed Kirby and the DC President plus three other DC psychiatrists. Each person who submits an entry in the Competition becomes an "Entrant," and agrees that, by the submission of such entry, these Official Competition Rules are binding upon such person. Eligibility to Enter the Competition; Number of Entries Allowed. An Entrant must be a psychiatric resident in a program located within Washington D.C. He/she may submit as many entries to the Competition as he/she wishes. Honorarium. The winning Entrant will be awarded an honorarium of $250 U.S. dollars in the form of a gift certificate to Kinkead's Restaurant, 2000 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20006-1812. The DC Psychiatric Society will announce the name, program of attendance, and other relevant information about the winner(s) on the Washington Psychiatric Society�s Internet site and elsewhere. If elements of two or more entries are determined by the DC Psychiatric Society to be appropriate to be combined into the final logo design, several winners are possible. In the event of multiple winners, the honorarium will be split evenly between or among them. No assignment, transfer or substitution of an honorarium is permitted. Taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner(s). Criteria for Selection of Winning Entries. The winner will be selected based upon the artistic quality of the design and the way(s) in which it symbolizes the DC Psychiatric Society. Entrants are encouraged to include with their entries a brief explanation of how the design of the logo being submitted reflects the DC Psychiatric Society. The logo should be suitable for adaptation to a variety of formats, such as the DC Psychiatric Society�s printed materials, its Web site, etc. It should maintain its appearance well in different sizes. The original logo can be black and white, grayscale, or in color, but it must reproduce well in black and white as a letterhead on 8.5"x11" official stationery. The logo may incorporate the name �The DC Psychiatric Society" or it may be a symbol or emblem to be used without the name. Format of Entries.�Each entry should contain the design of the logo, including any suggested associated lettering/wording. Each entry must contain the full name, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address of the entrant. Submission of Entries. All entries should be sent by e-mail to the DC Psychiatric Society at�davididriver@....�The DC Psychiatric Society will not accept entries by mail. Files should be GIF, JPEG, or PNG format. All Entry Materials Become Property of the DC Psychiatric Society. The DC Psychiatric Society will not be able to return submitted materials. Therefore an Entrant who submits any electronic materials to the DC Psychiatric Society in connection with the Competition shall agree, by the act of submitting such materials, that all such materials shall become the property of the DC Psychiatric Society, and the DC Psychiatric Society may delete, destroy or otherwise dispose of such materials without any obligation whatever to any Entrant to return such materials following the Competition. Competition Deadline. Review of entries will be on�November 3rd, 2009. All entries received by the DC Psychiatric Society before�November 3rd, 2009�will be reviewed simultaneously. Submissions made after this date will be accepted until a winner is selected. Right to Reject Entries. The DC Psychiatric Society reserves the right to reject any entry for any reason and, in case of such rejection, is not required to disclose the reason(s) therefore. In the event that none of the entries is determined by the DC Psychiatric Society to be satisfactory, there may be no winner of the Competition. If there is no such winner, it will be solely the right of the DC Psychiatric Society to determine whether to hold the prize and host another logo Competition. Notification of Competition Results. Following the selection of the winner(s), the names of such persons shall be posted on the DC Psychiatric Society Internet site, and such persons shall be notified by e-mail, telephone, or regular mail. Modification of the Winning Entries. The DC Psychiatric Society reserves the right to make modifications to the winning entry or entries to make the final logo(s) more appropriate for the use of the DC Psychiatric Society. These modifications may or may not be completed in collaboration with the winner(s). Title to and Transfer of Intellectual Property Rights. All rights to all intellectual property contained in such entry, including, without limitation, the rights to register such property in the name of the DC Psychiatric Society or any affiliated person in any or all jurisdictions in the world, the right to alter such intellectual property and to own any intellectual property thus derived, the rights to display and make copies of or otherwise publish such intellectual property in any print, film or other media, and the right to otherwise deal in and with such intellectual property, shall be vested in the DC Psychiatric Society. Each Entrant, by the submission of such entry, represents and warrants that the Entrant is the creator of such intellectual property, and, to the best of the knowledge or belief of the Entrant, the Entrant is the sole owner of such intellectual property, and no other person has any rights to such intellectual property, whether registered or unregistered. Agreement to Cooperate with the DC Psychiatric Society to Ensure Complete Transfer of Rights to Intellectual Property and to Defend the DC Psychiatric Society Rights Following Transfer. Each Entrant agrees, by the submission of such entry, that, should he or she become a winner or runner-up in the Competition, he or she shall take all reasonable steps to ensure that all rights described above shall be completely transferred to the DC Psychiatric Society, including, without limitation, the execution of such further assignments, transfers or other documents as shall be reasonably necessary to effect such transfer, and the preparation, execution and delivery of any documents, including, without limitation, factual statements regarding the origin of the intellectual property, as the DC Psychiatric Society shall require. Disputes.�Should any dispute arise between or among Entrants in the Competition regarding entries submitted by multiple users with the same e-mail account, the person whose name appears on the entry shall be deemed by DC Psychiatric Society to be the Entrant.
