Dear DC Psych Residents,

I would like to introduce Washington DC Psychiatry Residents to a very important outreach endeavor designed to assist the diplomatic community. The Disaster Preparedness Project is a prime means of connecting an area psychiatrist with an Embassy in the event of a disaster. Please refer to the following essay that outlines the details of this project: http://www.dcpsych.org/news/embassy.htm.

I recently met with Dr. Erminia Scarcella, the leader of the Disaster Preparedness Project, who agreed that residents are a powerful force that come from nations across the globe and have the potential of significant outreach to the diplomatic community. The Disaster Preparedness Project has now expanded to include MITs as part of this humanitarian effort!

I would like to gather all residents willing to represent psychiatry as a liaison with their country of representation. If you are interested in joining the Disaster Preparedness Project as a liaison, please email me. The above website is an excellent source of information as needed.

Once we gather a respectable number of resident liaisons, we will devise an appropriate outreach protocol guided by what is currently in place (the are current roughly 16 Embassies enrolled in this growing project). The resident liaison will have the opportunity to develop a close relationship with the Embassy and the Ambassador. Dr. Scarcella will lead us in this efforts.

I look forward to gaining resident interest and participation in the Disaster Preparedness Project, to working closely together to build our professional relationship with the international community, and to educating our rich, diverse community about mental health.

Warmly,

Hind
(PGY2 Georgetown)
