RE: Nomination to the APA Committee of Residents and Fellows
DATE: February 6, 2007
The Committee of Residents and Fellows (CORF) of the American Psychiatric Association is recruiting a resident representative from Area 2 ( New York State) and Area 3 (DC, DE, MD, NJ, PA). CORF is a standing APA committee which addresses concerns and priorities that affect psychiatry trainees. The Committee has an on-going agenda focused on:
1) Effective resident representation within the APA,
2) Communication of APA activities to members-in-training (MITs),
3) Coordination of educational workshops, and
4) Establishment of APA program initiatives to address the unique needs of trainees.
In addition, individual members and subgroups propose projects for the Committee to pursue. For example, a recent CORF-sponsored survey of chief residents will be used to identify ways that the APA can be more responsive to members-in-training during the transition to post-residency practice. See
http://www.psych.org/edu/resoper2.cfm for more information. The Committee meets annually at the APA Fall Components Meeting (September) and at the APA Annual Meeting (May). Members have a monthly
teleconference call and communicate actively by e-mail. The Committee is composed of approximately 11 residents and fellows.
The appointment is for a 3 -year term, from May 2007 to May 2010 starting at the Annual Meeting. Candidates must be in active training (either residency or fellowship) for three years of the
appointment. All nominees must be members of the APA.
Nominations should include the following:
1. A personal statement from the resident briefly describing past leadership experience, current professional interests, career goals, and how membership on the Committee of Residents and Fellows would complement the resident's professional development. (1-2 pages)
2. An updated copy of the resident's curriculum vitae .
3. A letter of recommendation from the training director which describes the resident's leadership potential, ability to serve as a team member, and capacity to function effectively within a committee structure. It would be helpful if the training director would comment on how participation in the Committee of Residents and Fellows would benefit the professional development of this resident.
4. A signed statement of support from the training director and/or department chair. This support includes time commitment to attend the APA Fall Components Meeting and the APA Annual Meeting, as well as financial assistance to attend the APA Annual Meeting. (The APA funds the expense of attending the APA Fall Components Meeting.)
Please forward all nominations by March 19, 2007 :
