The Brattleboro Retreat announces an immediate opening for an Inpatient Adult Psychiatrist
at its premier behavioral health facility in Vermont.
Retreat Healthcare, founded in 1834 as The Brattleboro Retreat, is a nationally
recognized non-profit organization that provides a full range of diagnostic, therapeutic
and rehabilitation services for adults, children, and their families. The hospital
was the first facility for the mentally ill in Vermont, and was one of the first
10 psychiatric hospitals in the United States.
Brattleboro Retreat specializes in mental health and addictions treatment. With
one of the highest ratios of clinical staff to patients, we provide comprehensive,
individualized care through inpatient and partial hospitalization programs as well
as outpatient care. We also have a separate residential unit dedicated to child
and adolescent behavioral health treatment.
Adult Psychiatric Services include inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient
services along with outpatient addictions programs and therapeutic services. We
work closely with individuals to assess particular needs and determine the optimal
level of care. At all times, we provide a safe, structured, and comfortable environment.
Our treatment philosophy is patterned after a Quaker concept called ‘moral treatment’
which focuses on treating each patient with dignity and respect and providing meaningful
work, cultural pursuits, wholesome nutrition, and daily exercise. In support of
this philosophy, the Retreat has pioneered several innovative programs, including
the first continuous patient newspaper, the first attendant’s training course, the
first gymnasium for patients, camping programs, and a swimming pool — all reflecting
the emphasis on physical well-being and optimal mental health.
The Inpatient Adult Psychiatric position at Brattleboro Retreat offers a comprehensive
salary and benefits package. Board certification and experience in an inpatient
setting is preferred but not a prerequisite to apply for this position. Patient
volume averages between nine and 11 per day. Call is from home during weekdays and
divided between approximately 12 medical staff. On weekends, call is well reimbursed,
offering an opportunity for additional compensation. Every attempt is made to schedule
weekend attendings who voluntarily take call for extra compensation.
The town of Brattleboro is located in southeastern Vermont and is nestled in the
Connecticut River Valley at the base of the Green Mountains. A regional center for
commerce, finance, and technology, Brattleboro also has been singled out in several
publications as one of the top arts and cultural locations in the country. Numerous
parks are nearby and recreational activities range from hiking and winter skiing
to fall drives and popular festivals. Our central proximity in New England just
off Interstate 91 provides for easy access to Boston, New York, and the coast of
Maine.
With affordable housing and cost of living, Brattleboro remains a tremendous setting
to call home in our cosmopolitan rural setting.
