A Special Day With Dad

A Summer Adventure to Remember
A True Story

“Wake-up sleepy heads, we’ve got a surprise
for you,” mom teased as she laid out our clothes.

“What kinda surprise?” asked my seven-year old
brother, pulling back his covers.

“Daddy’s taking us on a special adventure, but if
you want to go, you’ve got to hurry.”

My six-year old sister demanded more
information, “Where?”

“Sorry kids, it’s a surprise.”

With my stomach growling, I asked about breakfast.

Mom smiled, “You can eat in the car. Please dress
the baby while I finish packing our meals.”

“Meals?” my brother echoed.

“Yes,” mom said. “Meals. We’ll be gone all day.”

My curiosity piqued; I quickly pulled back my
hair then dressed my 2-year old sister.

Dad was already outside loading the car when
we descended from our second-floor apartment.
The aroma of fresh jelly-filled donuts permeated the car.

Without any idea of what dad had planned, I eagerly embraced the promise of a summer adventure. Clear blue skies greeted us as we drove through the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains. Suddenly I spotted a familiar sign. 'Welcome to Caroga Lake." We’re going to the amusement park!” I shouted.

“Not this time,” dad announced while glancing over at mom. It was obvious they enjoyed the fact that we were clueless. “You’ll know soon enough.”
Dad drove past the amusement park, past the
swimming area, and eventually parked alongside a little wooden building by the shore. We waited in the car while he went inside the weathered shack. Soon he returned waving a strange key and carrying two large oars.

“Everybody out,” he called, “I rented a boat. Today we’re picnicking on the other side of the lake.”
In unison, we cried out, "Hurray!"

Carefully, dad secured each of us four children and our pregnant mother in the boat. He handed mom the lunch basket, blanket, and bag of towels. Finally seated, he mounted the emergency oars, started the boat’s motor, and set
out on the glistening water.

A gentle mist sprayed us as the boat parted the lake’s cool waters. We laughed and waved to other boaters, pretending to be expert seamen. Our parents could not have chosen a more picture perfect day for our lake adventure.

Nearing our destination, mom noticed beautiful pieces of driftwood, some afloat, others resting below the water’s surface. I had never seen driftwood before. Each piece was uniquely beautiful. Dad promised that after lunch we could retrieve some.

To collect driftwood, we had to sit in the boat while dad was in the water. Consumed with our hunt, we never noticed the changing skies or that increasing winds were slowly pulling us off course. However, a clap of thunder in the distant sky caught our attention. Skies now graying, the threat of a storm became apparent.

Getting back into the boat, dad threw several pieces of driftwood back into the lake. “The boat is too heavy to go fast enough,” he explained to our protests.

Another crack of thunder, this time much closer,
released pouring rains from blackened clouds.
Mom jumped in fear, worried the next bolt would strike us. Quickly she huddled the four of us children together as best as she could, giving each of us a towel to cover ourselves.

The rains were hard and cold. Waves began rocking the boat as the winds swirled about us.
The storm’s intensity mounted, making it difficult for dad to see the shoreline.
Mom peeked out from under her towel long enough to realize the current was pulling us way
off course, right toward the dam. Abruptly, the engine ceased. Shivering, we cried. Mom prayed. Dad never flinched.

Gallantly he placed the oars in the lake, rowing with superhuman strength as he assured us everything would be okay. “Do you think I’m going to let anything happen to my family? There’s nothing to be afraid of as long as I’m with you. Stay calm and trust me.”

Though the storm did not let up, at that moment, a peace came over us. Dad promised we would be safe and somehow we knew we would be. All we had to do was trust him and he would rescue us.
How or when was beyond our understanding, but experience had taught us that he always kept his word. Later, dripping wet, we laughed as we piled into our car. Dad had promised an adventure, and it certainly was.

How often have days that began filled with promise been disrupted by the storms of life?
As the winds of doubt howl, the waves of fear pull, the rains of terror blind, and the claps of doom deafen, there is only one voice we need to hear; that of our loving Father who alone can rescue us[1].
Even when we do not know how or when,
all we need to know is that God always keeps
His Word.

Put your trust in Him today as He leads you
into the next adventure He has planned for you.
Enjoy each surprise. Soak in the view.
Discover something new.
Be confident of His loving faithfulness.

Remember, you are always safe when you are with your Father.
I was.

[1] Matthew 8:23-26 (NIV) “Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24) Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25) The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" 26) He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up
and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”

This story is in memory of my loving husband Rudy, who will not be with us this Father's Day, and will be greatly missed.
He has gone to his heavenly abode,
on September 14, 2007
It was written by our daughter, AngelMarie.

What is so special about this story is, if our earthly father is so concerned about our safety, how much more is our Heavenly Father concerned about us? He will never forsake us while we are going through a difficult situation. He will be right there to put His loving arms around us, and protect us.

So, as we celebrate Father's Day, we can honor our heavenly Father, with praises and a thankful heart, and know that He will always be there for us, to comfort and to guide us.

Love & Blessings, Mrs. P
