You are invited to participate in a
research project entitled "Self Perceptions of Non Custodial
Fathers: A Qualitative Approach."
This project is being conducted by
a student researcher Julie Richards as part of a Post Graduate Fourth
Year Study at Victoria University under the supervision of Dr. Wally
Karnilowicz from Victoria University, Psychology
Department.
Project
explanation
The research project will attempt
to gain insight into the self-perceptions of non-custodial fathers
post separation/divorce. This project aims to explore a non-custodial
father's feelings post forgiving or reconciliation. It is hoped that
this will give voice to non-custodial fathers and their
plight.
What will I be asked to
do?
You are being asked to participate
in 2 interviews of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours duration. The second
interview provides for a greater opportunity to gather in-depth
information related to the question of the life-world of non-custodial
fathers. The second interview will take place approximately 3 to 6
weeks after the first interview or may be scheduled earlier if you
wish. Therefore the total time required of you for the interview
process will be 2 to 3 hours. Each interview will be audiotape and
transcribed.
What will I gain from
participating?
To be given a voice and opportunity
to express the life-world of your experiences as a non-custodial
father. The potential benefits of the study include raising awareness
of non-custodial fathers and their roles, functions and culture,
providing non-custodial fathers a voice and allowing non-custodial
fathers a chance to be recognised. In short, the knowledge gained in
this study will assist in the understanding of non-custodial fathers
as they construct and manage their identities within contemporary
society.
How will the information I give
be used?
The information will be analysed
and transcribed to create a fourth year thesis. All names will be
changed to ensure confidentiality. Dr. Wally Karnilowicz and myself,
Julie Richards, will be privy to raw data pre completing the thesis.
Data will be kept for 5 years post thesis publication.
What are the potential risks of
participating in this project?
While we do not anticipate any
difficulties, issues may arise out of the interview which you may find
distressing or uncomfortable. If at any time you are feeling
uncomfortable or uneasy, the interview will cease at your request. You
may also withdraw at any time during the interview process. If you
wish to contact a counsellor for any reason, please contact Dr Gerard
Kennedy, School of Psychology, Victoria University, Ph. 03 9919 2481.
This contact is provided free-of-charge.
How will this project be
conducted?
Each participant will be involved
in two interviews of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours duration. The second
interview will take place approximately 3 to 6 weeks after the first.
Both interviews will consist of open and closed questions. Each
interview will be audio taped and transcribed. The data will then be
analysed with the aim to uncover meaning and understanding in the
self-perceptions of non-custodial fathers.
