Depends--
When my daughter was a baby our finances were in
shambles. Going to college and $150,000 in medical
bills from the hospitals. Our CF clinic worked very
hard with us on getting qualified for SSI. She was
classified as disabled because of all the
complications she was having. We were only on SSI for
one year until I graduated but it allowed us to have
Medicaid pay for the hospital bills.
Today I have a good career and we've never qualified
for anything like that since I make too much money.
(however, sometimes I wish i didn't. I would have a
better income) At anyrate, SSI was the route our
hospital and CF clinic took for my daughter. You
really should talk to your centers social services
counsilor and find out how your case fits inline with
the governments description of disability.
We know of other CF kids who were turned down for SSI
because of their health problems not being bad enough
for the classification. We did it back then and the
hospital pushed for it because we had one whopper of a
bill with them. But they say once you are classified
by the state as disabled, you can always get back on
SSI once the income levels drop back down to where
your child could receive Medicaid again.
Good Luck
