When singers say they've 'found their voice', they usually mean
they've honed their vocal skills and developed a style distinctly
their own. For singer/songwriter Alice Martineau however,
finding she had any kind of singing voice at all was a revelation.
Born and bred in London, Alice had cystic fibrosis.
Alice was a 30 year-old who, on the face of it, seemed to have
everything.
singing lessons unveiled a deep and powerful voice that
she described as 'somewhere between Dido and Natalie Imbruglia'.
Sony Records snapped her up and gave her a contract. Robbie
Williams and Blue were among her fans. Her record "if i fall" was
getting
airplay on radio one and she had released her album "Daydreams" in
october 2002
"So what!" I hear you say.
well for a start Alice, against considerable odds, wasn't
expected to live beyond the age of ten.
she never thought that having CF should ever stop her
fulfilling her dreams. she wanted to be a model she became one.
she wanted to write and sing. she got a deal with sony.
Despite her declining health, Alice played gigs regularly,
but sadly she lost her battle with CF and passed away on the 6th
march 2003.
she was a remarkable young woman who hated to be called 'brave'.
As far as she was concerned, she was simply an artist and performer
who happened to be ill.
