Re: [Cystic Fibrosis Support] Neg CF gene Pos CF mutation

I read your email and I am confused what you are
saying but I will try to explain this to the best of
my ability. You were tested to see if you carry a
mutation which is known to cause cystic fibrosis. 1
in 25 Caucasians carry a mutation for cystic fibrosis,
80% of new reported cases are to couples which do not
have any family history of cystic fibrosis.

Your husband is now being tested to see if he carries
a mutation for cystic fibrosis. If he carries a
mutation then you have a 25% chance of having a child
with cystic fibrosis, a 50% chance the child will be a
carrier, and a 25% chance the child will not carry any
defective genes.

I am sorry to hear your bad news and I hope your
husband does not have CF. My wife and I have halted
our IVF until we obtain genetic counseling since one
of her children from a previous marriage has been
diagnosed as a carrier.

Trust me you do not want to bring a child into this
world with cystic fibrosis.

Best,

Terry
