Re: 3 week old positive sweat test   Message List

Hi Danielle,
It would be a good idea to have the sweat test done.....but since your little
one is not quite a month old I would wait a few more weeks. My daughter I had
tested within a few weeks after birth because I had just lost her 5 yr old
brother to cf the year before. So I knew right away I wanted to know as soon as
possible....the sweat test was done, we were told she didn't have cf. Thought we
had gotten away from this disease. But, as time went by, symptoms
appearing.....between sinusitis, diarrhea, repeated episodes (15 times) of
bronchitis in 18 months.........the question kept nagging at me.....could she
have cf......so, to put myself out of misery and if she did have cf, get her
started on meds and treatments soon as possible, I took her to the same cf
doctor who took care of my son and explained to him what my concerns were. He
told me by looking at her that she had cf, but yes, we did repeat the sweat
tests....two different times in fact. Sure enough my daughter did have cf after
all. CF has never been found on my side of the family...only my husbands. My
daughter was a chunky little girl when she was born and put on weight
throughout....She was a big size girl compared to what her brother had been. I'm
hoping your little one is negative for CF. But if she is positive it's best to
get her started now on meds and treatments to stay ahead if at all possible.

I found this group in hopes of some answers. My daughter was born
Dec.27,2006. Her heel stick test has screened a positive result for us
one CF mutation. I have to have a sweat test done on her. As of now-
She is almost a month old and has no symptoms- She does not taste
salty, she has normal stools and she has gained two pounds and two
inches since birth. I guess I am just unsure of the chances of her not
having CF. There is NO history of it on either side, However my sister
is a carrier for it- so I suppose I am as well. I guess my question is
this- Is there any chance that she is just a carrier herself??
