Hello Cloyce,
My cousin, who does not have CF, is currently on a growth hormone. She
started it at age 15 because she had not started her monthly cycle and was
also quite short. She had developed breasts, but they weren't exactly as
large as they perhaps should have been, as the other women in her family
were larger than her size. So it was felt that growth hormones would be a
viable option. I believe she may have had a blood test to check for hormone
levels as well.
Growth hormones, if needed, are not that much of a problem. My cousin was on
them for approximately 6 months, and then they could be ceased. During the
treatment she grew, her monthly cycle started, and she also gained weight.
The weight gain meant she was in the higher levels of average/lower levels
of being overweight. However my cousin was actually happy with this "trade
off" because she wanted to grow in height and the like.
I believe that it is not really uncommon for women, and perhaps men, to
underdevelop. Perhaps it has something to do with nutrition or genetics, I'm
not to sure.
However I assume that if the doctor feels it is a viable option, and his
opinion has been backed up with evidence based practice and studies, then
perhaps it is the way to go. If there are adverse effects, or it just isn't
right, then she could be weaned off them.
Sorry, I don't think I have been very much help, I never used them, but
based on my cousins experience I feel it was an ok option.
Good luck!
~ Rach
