Zofran can be taken by children , my 7 year old has been taking it for 2 years
now but it is only really effective before the episode and then only cuts the
vomiting from 40 to 50 times to 10 times or so....which of course is a good
thing.....I do use it during the vomiting as well just in the hopes that it may
help but it usually doesnt seem to. We just started trying Ativan during an
episode so she can sleep through it and that seemed to work nicely this time
around ...she slept almost all day and woke up vomit free and just had her
residual dizziness the next day.....symptom control seems to be all that can be
done really , we have tried all other preventative meds and nothing works for
Sarah. Her episodes seem to be lengthening the time between them which is good
, they were 4 to 5 weeks and now are between 6 to 8 weeks which makes it tougher
to now kind of plan around them as we used to be able to do .....

The Zofran will not be helpful if started once sick. You need to start
it the minute she feels nauseated. There is a protocol for sedation and
IV's if sick enough to go to the ER. Your hospitalization seemed
lengthy. They need to sedate and hydrate rather than antiemitics. Watch
her diet and aim for low fat and high carb and protein. Make sure she
has lots of sleep and start looking for her " triggers" to know them.
(Stress, tired, greasy food, air travel, etc. Keep a diary of events as
to dates, location, possible triggers, patterns, etc. I don't know
where you are from but if anywhere near Childrens Hospital in Chicago
they have a CVS unit. Minimally call and ask for their literature.
We have all been there and many of us have seen our children get better.
Hang in there and use this organization as a resource. You will soon
know more than most of the doctors who don't know much about it if
anything.

still, I am hoping that this lets up soon. Hard to sleep at night as I
am sure you all well know. She is down 12 pounds and tips the scale at
a slight 57 pounds (she is 9 years old). She's on Zofran, which she has
been puking right through it like it had no effect, she also had
prevacid in the hospital, no help there. So she is in for a checkup
tomorrow morning. I think that they felt sorry for us and let us come
home for Christmas, hoping that we won't be readmitted to the hospital
again due to dehydration...trying to keep fluids in her. Looking for
the light at the end of the tunnel!
