hello my name is Chante and I am a new member. Fortunatly, my son,
Layson has only had two episodes. Both times were very frightening,
but I feel very blessed to have been able to get a early diagnosis.
The two episodes happened w/i 2 wks of each other, and the symptoms
were exactly the same both times. We were referred to a doctor in
New Orleans who recognized the symptoms immediately. The 1st
episode we were not successful with promethazine (for nausea) for
48hrs, so into the hospital we went. After another 12 hrs of
unsuccesful IV treatment of promethazine, still no relief. Layson
was still saying his stomach has hurting bad. So my husband
demanded something strong for pain to see if he could get relief.
Our Dr. put in an order for morphine and with in 30 minutes Layson
popped up in bed and said "I feel better!!!" we returned home the
next morning. The second episode happened 2 weeks later. My son is
6 yrs old and 48lbs, and doesn't take very long b/f signs of
dehydration sets in. This time we went to the hospital w/i 6 hrs
because to our horror, the same exact thing was happening again and
we new that a ride to the hospital was coming any way so went sooner
this time. After 2 or 3 hrs in the ER we had to go through all the
tests which took about 6 hrs. While on the xray table and having to
drink all that nasty stuff for an upper and lower GI Layson was in
fetal position saying his stomach hurt bad. So we had the doctor
order morphine again. Layson was exsausted so he slept for about 6
hrs after the morphine was given. To our surprise, he woke up
symptom free and starving!! It was after this we went to see the
Dr. in New Orleans. We went through all his questions and like I
said he recognized the symptoms immediately. To make sure we
weren't missing any thing internally he ordered a scope of his
stomach as well as a biopsy but everything was normal. It is now a
year later and yesterday morning (the 2nd day of school) he woke up
saying his stomach was hurting. Franticly we ran to the medicine
cabinet and got a Pepcid AC tablet to give to him. About 5 to 10
min later he vomited and diarrhea kicked in. He vomited two more
times and then he said his stomach felt better. He did fine the
rest of the day. We are not sure if this was just a stomach bug or
a mild attack of CVS. Whatever it was we were very blessed not to
have to end up in the hospital again. I feel for all who battle
with CVS and will pray for those who suffer and also for a
breakthrough in research.
