I would like to add how excited TAP (The Autism Project) has been that Dr. Chris
Menard has increased his availability to do testing of kids to determine whether
they are falling on the autism spectrum. In addition, I believe that Health
Alliance (HAMP) has an arrangement to use him as a provider and cover
approximately 80% of his fees. Thanks for posting, Chris!!! And welcome!

Hello
I wanted to pass along some more information about seeing Dr. Morton at Carle.
Carle has a Child Diagnostic Clinic which is directed by pscychologist Dr.
Andrea Klein, Ph.D., ABPP. This is a multidisciplinary group where your child
can be seen by Dr. Klein as well as Dr. Morton, speech pathologist, occupational
therapist, audiologist, social worker and psychometrist. As a group, they then
provide a diagnosis and develop a comprehensive plan for home and school as well
as appropriate therapies and services.
Because it is not known of as well, the waiting list as of now is much shorter.
Call Cleo Green @ 217-326-1486 for more information.
Hope this helps some.
Thanks,

PATH and Solution Circles are powerful graphic facilitation tools
developed by Jack Pearpoint, Marsha Forest and John O'Brien.
Strategies for community-building have been developed by many

I have 6 year old twins with autism and we live in Normal. Our
school district (Unit 5) has contracted with Margie Jobe, retired
special ed director from Champaign for consulting services
to "evaluate" special ed services in our district. At first I was
supportive of having an outside evaluation as our district is very
unsupportive of ABA training for teachers, aides, and occupational
and speech therapists. In fact, they won't even use the
term "applied behavioral analysis" in an IEP, inventing the term
prompt-cue-response as a synonym that apparently covers them from
claims that their procedures are not consistent with ABA.
So I was pleased that we are getting an outside review but then I
read the comments of our district's board president from last year,
Scott Lay, that are giving me second thoughts. According to our
local newspaper
http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2007/09/27/news/doc46fb3a684079412
6037689.txt
"The other consultant, Jobe would be hired "for another form of
expertise the district needs" in the area of special education,
Niehaus said. She will look at the process to identify students with
special-education needs and other aspects of special education in
Unit 5.
She also has experience in "program reviews." The Champaign district
reviews 25 key programs, including special education, on a five-year
rotation to update the school board and administration and recommend
changes. Hiring Jobe would provide long-term cost savings, Niehaus
said.
"I enthusiastically support this," said board member Scott Lay. He
has been concerned with the rate of growth in the number of special
education students in the district. Lay said that if the rate of
growth continued at the pace it was at a few years ago, there would
be more special education students than regular students at some
point. The district spends 13 percent to 15 percent of its budget on
special education, he said."
It sounds to me like he is hoping to serve fewer students and cut
costs while the hope of parents is that district staff will start
learning how to teach children with autism. Have any of you in
Champaign had any experience with Margie Jobe, good or bad?
Thanks!

I had attended the Asperger's support group in Monticello on Tuesday
and I found it to be a very positive experience and I plan to attend
regularly.
I spend so much of my time talking to others about the ways to deal
with the challenges that Erik's Asperger's present that it was
really uplifting to hear the discussion about the many strengths and
gifts that these kids have. After the speaker, Joan Clark, gave her
presentation that included numerous charming and hilarious stories,
the parents and teachers all had great stories to tell about their
own kids. It was just plain fun. I showed up because I needed
information to deal with a particular problem that was wearing on
Erik, his family, and teachersI left with a smile on my face and
feeling very uplifted.

Grazia, I talked to Ron Bribriesco about your needs. He is asking that you or Deb Bliss email him a list of items with an identified catalogue, catalogue number and price for each item and he will see what they can do. Hope you have a great time in Italy. I think if Deb sends him this list you could have the stuff by the time you get back. Felicia

Bush Set to Veto
HHS-Labor-Education Appropriations Bill Due to Provision to Remove Mercury

SafeMinds and
autism community call the White House declaration “irresponsible and
dangerous.”
Washington, DC – According to
the Congressional Quarterly, the White House stated on Tuesday that President
Bush would veto the HHS-Labor-Education Appropriations Bill because of the
cost and “objectionable provisions” such as a measure to ban the use of
childhood flu vaccines that contain thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative.
Autism advocacy
groups are outraged because President Bush stated in a questionnaire during
his 2004 campaign: “I support the removal of Thimerosal from vaccines
on the childhood national vaccine schedule. During a second term as
President, I will continue to support increased funding to support a wide
variety of research initiatives aimed at seeking definitive causes and/or
triggers of autism. It is important to note that while there are many
possible theories about causes or triggers of autism, no one material as been
definitely included or excluded.”
But since
2005, President Bush has steadfastly refused to issue an Executive Order
banning high amounts of mercury in vaccines that would protect children and
pregnant women despite repeated requests from the autism community that he
uphold his campaign promise. Under his current administration, mercury
has been and will continue to be knowingly injected into the youngest of
American citizens. The controversial mercury-containing preservative
thimerosal has been linked by thousands of parents as being the cause of
their children’s mercury poisoning and autism.
The flu vaccine
which continues to be manufactured with mercury is recommended for all
pregnant women, infants and children despite the fact that the Institute of Medicine
in 2001 recommended against the policy of exposing these same sensitive
groups to thimerosal containing vaccines. According to the EPA, one in every
six women of childbearing age already has blood levels of mercury high enough
to cause neurological damage to their unborn children due to environmental
exposures alone. “Injecting even more mercury into the bodies of
pregnant women, infants and children when it is not a necessary component of
vaccines is just bad medicine,” said Lyn Redwood, president of SafeMinds and
parent of a mercury-injured child. “It defies logic that a flu vaccine must
be disposed of as a hazardous waste if it is not used, but somehow injecting
the same mercury-containing vaccine into a baby is safe.”

Another thought....I think some of this equipment can also be made (especially
things like the crash pad, a platform swing and maybe even the frog swing).
Also, at one point, for families in Champaign County with children from 3-5, I
think DSC had some limited funds to help with therapeutic items that could be
used in the home. You would have to contact DSC to see if that is still true.

HI Grazia
Some people have found equipment like this on eBay-of course, it's a matter of
looking at the right time, but you can also set it up for eBay to let you know
when what you are looking for goes on an eBay site.
These are all great pieces of sensory equipment!

There is a wonderful lady named Bonnie Stanton who has a horse place just outside of Philo. It's really only about 5 minutes south of Urbana. She has a program for children with disabilities to ride horses, and her horses are specially trained. I don't have the number but I bet someone
will chime in with more information.

I contacted a month ago The Thoughtful House in Austin because I
want to switch my daughter from the clinic in Milwaukee where she is going to
do biomedical. They are very nice and I didn’t fill all the paper yet.
They have a good stuff and prestigious too. There is the doctor who raise the
issue about MMR vaccine. A friend of mine who lives in Austin give me their
names, there is a four weeks of waiting before to get in.
I hope that can help

Recent studies have shown that there is currently a worldwide autism
epidemic. In fact, more than 1.5 million people are affected in the
United States alone, with one in every 150 children diagnosed. Here
are some additional autism statistics:
Families with one autistic child have a 2 to 8 percent chance of
having another autistic child
Boys are three or four times more likely to be diagnosed with an ASD
In terms of developmental disabilities, autism is the third most
common (only mental retardation and cerebral palsy rank ahead of it)
Mental retardation is present in 75-80% of individuals with autism
Autism occurs more often than childhood cancer or cystic fibrosis
Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability. In the U.S.,
autism increased by 172% during the 1990s.
When autism is detected and treated early, costs associated with the
disorder can be reduced by 66%.
It's true that early detection and early treatment are the two key
factors in improving prognosis -- but too often parents get bogged
down in denial or confusion about this still mysterious disorder, and
are unable or unwilling to take the necessary steps.
The Essential Guide to Autism contains advice and information that
will help you make the right treatment decisions for your child.

I was wanting to find out if any one here has kidcare or familycare
insurance. And if so what do you think of it, do you like it? If you
do not have it, do you know of anyone who does or heard anything about
it?
Thanks, Jenn
