WHY
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as
Inflammatory Bowel Disease, affect an estimated one million Americans.
These chronic and debilitating digestive disorders have no known cure
or cause. Recent advances in the understanding and treatment of IBD
can help patients manage their IBD more effectively. Yet, a recent
study of IBD patients showed that 62% of those with ulcerative colitis
and 78% of those with Crohn's disease felt ill-informed about their
disease. These statistics are especially important because IBD is a
life-long disease. In addition, IBD patients are at an increased risk
of developing osteoporosis from lack of nutrition and exposure to
steroids, as well as an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer.
"Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: 2008" is sponsored by the
Foundation for Clinical Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease through
an unrestricted educational grant from UCB Group. For more information
