My husband has had mild UC for 3 years. A friend with UC recommended that
he try nicotine patches as he decreased his dosage of prednisone. He uses
14mg nicotine patches and feels that they have been some benefit. He is
currently also taking 5mg of prednisone a day and Asacol but I'm not sure
how much. He really feels that the patches do help him. We recently spent
2 weeks traveling in China which included long bus rides and he never had a
problem. He attributes some of that to the nicotine patches. However, he
hasn't really been very scientific about figuring out if they are really
helping and said that it could just be a kind of placebo effect. But we
figure if it makes him feel relaxed and not worried about having to rush to
a a toilet then it is worth it. Hope this helps.
