Hi Terry,
My story is similar to yours. My UC started when I was 18, and I am
41 now. Dairy products had a severe adverse effect on my UC and I
was advised to stay away from them during flare ups.
I only dabbled with calcium supplements, only taking them
occasionally.
I would urge anyone with UC to take supplementary calcium. This may
help combat the effects of prednisolone and poor mineral absorbtion
and it may help in avoiding the problems I am now facing.
My GP has told me that most of our 'bone bank' is built up before the
age of about 30, and so the best I can hope for now is to maintain
things at their current level, through medication and supplements.

have severe osteoporosis, and was diagnosed at 33. My original GI
told me to stay away from milk during attacks, and only have it when
I'm on steroids. That would have been fine if he would have put me on
supplements, but being young and stupid (17) I never questioned it.
I did keep drinking milk but not enough to protect my bones.

way late and I could break bones as easily as bending over a fence.
He was very upset that the other GI wouldn't get a calcium regiment
going, to keep the bones healthy.

all the diary I want, and thing have levelled out. Now starts the
rebuilding. As they say it's never too late.
