Peyronies disease is a curvature of the penis caused by abnormal
scarring of the tunica albuginea. The tunica albuginea is the tough
sheath that holds the corpora cavernosa, and they hold the blood that
causes an erection. When a man has Peyronies disease the scarring on
the tunica albuginea prevents that part of the corpora cavernosa from
enlarging during an erection.
When part of the penis cannot expand, the penis bends or curves or
shows bumps and indentations. Once the scarring of Peyronies disease
starts, in spreads over more and more of the tunica albuginea. The
deformations can make intercourse impossible and can cause severe pain.
No one knows just what causes Peyronies disease. Researchers speculate
that it begins with tiny, unnoticed injuries to the penis. There seems
to be some genetic component and it is more common in men of northern
European descent than in other populations.
Although men as young as their twenties can have Peyronies disease, it
is most common among men between forty five and sixty five.
Because of the deformity, men may become anxious and women may be
repelled, so that intercourse is a problem even when the disease does
not make it so. But as Peyronies disease progresses, the curvature of
the penis can be so pronounced and the pain so severe that intercourse
is impossible.
Sometimes the penis gets rigid up to the scarred area and stays
flaccid past that point. Or, the penis may narrow right at the scar
tissue in an hour_glass shape. When the penis is very curved,
intercourse is painful for both parties.
Peyronies disease has its phases of improvement with no treatment at
all, and about half the time Peyronies disease will stop progressing
on its own.
