The post WWII American ethical decline had not yet begun in earnest in 1959. At the time, I was a gung-ho radar technician with the Strategic Air Command...when most folks still tended to trust the media and their government. All folks needed to know was that Batista was a dictator and that his police chief was a monster. There was also the American tradition of championing the underdog.

The "comparison" was yet to come and then it was too late to do anything about it.
The major oversight of those who draw conclusions from history is their failure to familiarize themselves with the Zeitgeist. Criticism for Using atomic bombs to end WWII is a prime example.
