First practice makes perfect. Find someone who will allow you to practice on
their heads or a mannequin. Far as zig-zags or patterns...part the hair in
which you are braiding in the pattern that you choose and as you braid allow
the braid and your hands to move in that pattern as well. I know easier said
than done. You could also just part the hair to the scalp in a certain design
or zig-zag and just have the braids staying straight,
And if your main trouble is just making designed parts, practice on that
first and just clip or twist the section in place as you move along. Once you
get the hang of that then you should start braiding with the pattern and moving
yourself as you go to flow with it.
