Mr. Joe Mathers,

I was referred to you by Nathan from Troy Gardens. I'm in a Social Work
class on homelessness and for our service learning project for the
class, my twin sister and I volunteer at the Off the Square Club in
Madison. The Off the Square Club is a day shelter for individuals with a
diagnosed mental illness and who are also suffering with drug/alcohol
abuse. To boost motivation and to help the club members take pride in
their shelter, Rachael and I decided that it would be beneficial if we
organized a "clean up day" where members and staff clean up the
shelter's backyard and then celebrate with a cookout.

The Off the Square club's backyard has a small basketball court, a few
plants, a broken picnic table, over-grown trees, thin grass with weeds,
etc. Pretty much everything in the backyard is overgrown, dying, or
broken. As typical of shelters, The Off the Square Club does not have
money to fund a clean up day so I asked my Professor if she knew of any
organization that could help us out and she referred me to Troy Gardens
who referred us to you. I was wondering if Community Action Coalition
had any extra flowers, grass, small gardening tools, outside seating,
etc. to donate to us for our clean up day scheduled tenatively for this
Saturday, May 12th. Please let me know if this is possible and thank you
for your consideration.

Best,
Mikala Steenholdt

Hi Julie!
Thanks for the info, and for the welcome. My house is the one with the blue
metal roof on Jerome- stop in sometime if you're around! Also I wanted to let
you know (if you don't already) that a pair of Cooper's Hawk's are nesting in
the large elm in the little forest corner of Allis' property (where the big oak
and wildflowers are). Last year, they nested right across from my house. Keep an
eye out for them!

>>> "Julie Fitzpatrick" <jfitzpatrick@...> 03/22/07 2:03 PM >>>
Hi Clare,
Welcome to the neighborhood! I live 5 blocks off Buckeye, but on the far side of
Stoughton Rd. The construction at Allis will all be inside, but they will have
lots of equipment outside, so they recommended not doing the garden this year.
They are putting in a new furnace and all new duct work, upgrading electrical,
new lights, some new ceilings and soffits. We have to take home all of our
personal stuff, even furniture. It shouldn't impact the neighbors much, though,
I wouldn't think.

>>> "Clare Seguin" <cseguin@...> 03/22/07 9:57 AM >>>
Hi Julie!
I live nearly next door to Allis now, and am wondering what kind of
construction is in store. I hadn't heard of any....
And, how are you?

>>> "Julie Fitzpatrick" <jfitzpatrick@...> 03/21/07 4:33 PM >>>
Hi Ben,
I would like a couple to start a patch with. Our school garden will be out of
commission this summer, due to building construction not wanting us in their
way, but I will start them at my house and move some to school next summer.
Thank you! You have my sympathy for losing your grandfather and uncle.

>>> "Ben Sommers" <bens@...> 03/21/07 2:21 PM >>>
Hi All,

I am planning on digging some raspberry bushes this weekend, and would
like to offer them free to anyone who is interested in starting a patch.
These are "special" not because of their ability to grow in outer space
or anything amazing, but because they are part of a large patch tended
by my grandfather and uncle since 1991. Both Gramps and Uncle Scott
passed away in 2006 and I would be very happy to see their work live on
in years to come. We are preparing to sell the house, so this is a
one-time offer.

They are VERY prolific bushes; bearing large, flavorful, deep-red fruit.
I do not know the variety but are growing very well in Beaver Dam, so
would likely do well in the Madison area.

Please respond to me by Friday with any requests. The amount I can give
each person depends on how many people respond, as there is only so much
room in the back of my Subaru.

Be well and happy, happy Spring,

Benjamin Sommers

Yes, this is probably a strange combination of messages, but here they are. Check these two websites:

www.wiscpsa.org Why? Because there are lots of wonderful things you can get through the Earth Day Online Auction through Wisconsin Partners for SustainAbility (dinner for 4 at Lombardino's or Dardenelles! Overnight stays at hotels and resorts, massages, non-toxic products, flowers…green stuff for community building) and the auction is only online until April 22.

Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication, is coming to Madison May 1-2. His topic: "Speaking Peace in a World of Conflict: Conversational Judo with a Heart Connection." This training has been especially popular and effective with social workers, counselors, law enforcement, corrections and juvenile justice personnel, teachers and parents. Dr. Rosenberg has taught throughout the world.

Key words: conflict resolution, restorative justice, counseling, negotiation, mediation, violence prevention

Tuesday, May 1 and Wednesday, May 2 Workshops

Hi Katherine,

Yup, there are a few bags left here at Spaight. Take two if you want, as I
think a few others have not come by yet either. With the cold nights coming, it
will important to get them back in the ground ASAP. I hope they grow well for
you.

I have dug the raspberries and they are ready to go. I left the full
canes attached, as they were not cut down last fall and already showing
signs of life...the existing canes may make it. If not, new shoots
should soon form from the rhizomes. Each plastic bag should contain 3-5
rhizomes, which may be seperated and planted a few feet apart, or left
as a clump and planted as is. Water liberally after planting.

Please come by CAC, 1717 N. Stoughton Rd. to pick up if you are on the
North side. They are placed under a semi-trailer we use for storage
near the rear of the building. There are 14 bags here. Or, stop by
Ben's house 1237 Spaight St. (Near Orton Park & Willy St. Co-Op) and
choose from the 10 bags in back of the house. They are partly under a
roll of rubber roofing to protect the roots from exposure to sunlight.
Or, make arrangements with me on a pick-up or drop off time and place.

**Please take only one bag per person, for now, as I have just about as
many bags as people who requested them. I may be able to go get more
for those who requested more.**

I am not an expert on these plants, but some of my family dug and
transplanted last year in late April and they were successful, so this
should work. Below is a link from UW-EX on growing raspberries in WI.

Thanks everyone for your interest and please let me know how you do!

Ben

Hi Clare,
Welcome to the neighborhood!

Hi Julie!
I live nearly next door to Allis now, and am wondering what kind of
construction is in store. I hadn't heard of any....
And, how are you?

Hi Ben,
I would like a couple to start a patch with. Our school garden will be out of
commission this summer, due to building construction not wanting us in their
way, but I will start them at my house and move some to school next summer.
Thank you! You have my sympathy for losing your grandfather and uncle.
