Hope you are having a wonderful summer of gardening and enjoying lots of fresh locally grown produce!
Last week the accessible gardening project made the front page of the Wisconsin State Journal, it was very exciting to see all our hard work noticed by so many.
We are moving right along with our goal to make community gardens more accessible to people with disabilities.
This Saturday we will be beginning construction of a raised bed plot at the Atwood gardens and can always use an extra hand. We will be meeting at 8:30am along the bike path by St.Paul and Ohio Avenue. Come if you can and by chance if you have a power drill that would be useful to bring along.
Either way, stop by sometime and check out the new bed!

Here's a copy of the email I sent, with a draft of the brochure attached.
You are the greatest...I admire your energy and initiative on the conference and the brochure. It's great to have something to work with. Here are my comments on the brochure--some general comments in this email and editing comments on the brochure copy itself.
1. If we can focus on images as much as words, we're better off. Too many words tend to make people not read them all. So wherever we can, it helps to reduce the verbiage. The brochure is most useful as a selling/outreach tool to get people interested. Our purpose should be to get readers to talk to us, call, email or attend a meeting. So we don't need a lot of detail; just enough to tell readers the benefits of their involvement. People need to know right away why they should participate; what they can get if they give some of their time and energy to this. Photos or other graphics will help a lot, as long as we keep this fairly simple.
2. Particularly because we appeal to older people and those with disabilities, it's important to make this easy to read. Althought the script is pretty, it's a bit hard to read. The most recent font you picked is better, but the reading experts will tell us it is also hard to read. The brochure should feature at least 12 point type, if not larger. It's probably better, too, to avoid abbreviations and acronyms like CFGN. Hard to remember, not nearly as "friendly" and warm as full words, and not very informative to people who aren't familiar with the Community Food and Gardening Network.
3. Since we want this brochure to be useful for as long as possible, it's helpful to avoid anything that dates the brochure. So...I suggest putting it all in the present tense and listing accomplishments as though they are still occurring or will occur.
4. Unless you think there are compelling reasons not to use the slogan "Plant, Grow...and Share What You Know" I think we should have it on most things the group uses. People seem to like it. It communicates the flavor of what this is all about, and it can be an important part of the identity of the group. It attracts attention and offers both graphic and verbal identity.
5. We don't want to imply that the groups listed are the only ones who can be part of the network, or people will wonder why (as they already have) they or their group is not included. For many reasons, we need to be open to more participating organizations, associations, agencies and community groups. Listing them also communicates the flavor (diversity, partnership, public and private) of the whole endeavor.
6. Finally, a key objective of this brochure is to get more people involved. So we have to have an action line; an invitation and suggestion about what readers can do to take advantage of the opportunities provided. It's always good to try to get people to act, so I tend to put in several action lines.
More specific suggestions are on the document itself. For editing purposes I have changed the typeface from script to a more readable font. If we paid a graphic designer for the design, she would probably pick the font. Some form of serif makes it easier to read.
Hope this helps. Again, thanks for your work on this.
Hello- The brochure is aimed toward people who are not familiar with the community food and garden network. It is a little wordy but I wanted to fully explain what it is and brochures provide a whole lot of space! How are things at Troy? Who do you have gardenening there? I talked with a guy from the newspaper who wants to do a story on the raised bed project. Would any of your gardeners be interested in being in the newspaper? Let me know. ~Ashleigh

July’s meeting is being hosted by Braeburn Court. They are a private non-profit agency that serves elderly adults with Alzheimer's Disease in a residential setting and frail elderly in an assisted living environment.
Come and tour their 24 flowerbeds and have plenty of time for networking. Braeburn Court is located at 2875 Fish Hatchery Road, Madison on the Fitchburg side of Fish Hatchery, next to the McDonalds. Please bring snacks and drinks to share
Some items on the agenda include planning for an accessible conference that is scheduled for the fall. This conference will include a tour of accessible gardens in the Madison area, as well as speakers who are very knowledgeable in accessible gardening.
And planning for a teacher workshop in October to encourage and direct more teachers who work with school gardens. Madison Metro School District will approve this workshop and teachers will be able to receive credit for attendance.
Please bring your ideas for your programs!
If we all work together we can ensure that gardening will be possible for everyone in Madison regardless of age or disability!
**We still have T-shirts available for purchase, only $10!!
Due to numerous requests we are trying the meeting at a different date.

We had the first meeting of the Raised Bed Access Committee on Monday June 9th.
We started the meeting by introducing ourselves and giving a brief history our work with people with disabilities and/or gardening.
We explained the committee as a group of people that act as a steering committee to oversee the raised bed garden project at community gardens. It was made very clear that there is no time commitment necessary to be on this committee, and that physical labor was up to the individual participant.
This committee will help design the beds by deciding best materials, height and size of the garden beds.
The raised bed project requires sustainability. The boxes need to be built of materials that will hold up for at least 5-20 years. (The more years the better!) There always need to be gardeners using the beds.
This committee could decide to be active only as long as the raised beds are initially being built, or they could participate for years and years to come.
We all agreed that a lot could be improved upon with accessible gardening in Madison.
Beth and I passed out the work plan we created for raised beds. The plan includes putting beds into Atwood, St. Paul, Troy, Truax, Quann and Gammon Community Gardens.
The first bed we would like to get working on is Atwood. Because of its central location, and potential wheelchair accessibility this would be a good garden to get underway.
We toured the site and decided that a workday needs to be planned. Unfortunately we were not able to set a date.
The layout of this garden would include a one sided wheelchair accessible bed near the bike path, raised bed gardening on the other side of the bed, traditional ground gardening in the middle and a raised bed at the top. (I hope that makes sense for all of you that haven’t seen it!) If anyone is interested in looking at the potential site it is located at the east corner of Ohio and St. Paul, the second garden in. It has black plastic on the lower half and is being gardened on the upper half.
One exciting and unexpected result of the meeting is to plan a full day conference on accessible gardening in November. The plan for this conference includes a citywide tour that features accessible gardening and will be hosted by Focuscorp.
If you are interested in participating in this committee please contact Ashleigh or Beth at 246-4730 ext. 238 or by email!

Thanks for forwarding the message on to Atwood. We will be making the tomato plants available to all the community gardens. The plan is to drop off several flats at St.Paul, Quann, Troy and Eagle Heights and leave them under the informational garden sign. Gardeners can feel free to pick up as many as they need from those sites. I reccommend checking at any one of the garden sites by mid-week. If you would like, we may be able to drop some off at other locations. We will also have flats with a variety of vegetables and flowers.
Take care,
Beth

I'm forwarding the message to the Atwood Community Center & Rebecca Krantz
who works with WPNA on an ongoing basis. I don't know if they have any links
to food pantry users who might plant a tomato or not. Also, I'd recommend
the same for Salvation Army food pantry site.
I'd like to use some for the WPNA children's / community garden and don't
know how to take advantage of the offer (personal time constraints). I am
very booked up with current events and can not afford to take on another
role at this time. However, if I can further help make any connections with
the above, please let me know.
thanks.

Thank you to the participants of the Community Food
and Garden Network!
We had a wonderful meeting on June 2nd at Focuscorp.
Focuscorp helped to set CGFN on a great track by
hosting the event and sharing their program with
everyone.
Minutes
We started with introductions and some great food
donated by Kentucky Fried Chicken.
*Susan Boltd told us about her project using Italian
Heirloom varieties in her Seed to Supper Program.
*Kathy DeKeyseth shared her stories of getting
donations at the Saturday Farmers Market for the
garden club at the Romnes live-in facility.
*Deb Allen and Catherine Tissot of Focuscorp gave us a
tour of their garden.
The garden consists of 4 ground plots, 2 bench
planters, 1 table planter and 1 large flower box. It
was very nice to see their garden with the budding
greens of spring and to hear about the work that they
have been doing. (A table planter is set up like a
table, a gardener is able to pull up a wheelchair or
chair and garden from a sitting position. The bench
planter has a bench with 2 planters and either side.)
Deb and Catherine told us that they put in the table
and bench planters about 4 years ago with the help of
their Art Therapist. At that time they also put in 1
ground plot. With renewed interest from employees
they expanded their garden this year and have plans
for continued expansion. They also have a grand idea
for transforming an old bus that is no longer in use
into a greenhouse. The bus could be connected to the
building by a window and will have a lift to help
gardeners in wheelchairs into the greenhouse. Good
for you Focuscorp for your creativity and imagination!
*We discussed the definition and mission of the
Community Food and Garden Network and the need to have
a concrete definition for explanation purposes or for
donation requests. Catherine printed up a short
explanation of CFGN and its mission. It reads:
CFGN is currently coordinated by volunteer students
through the Community Action Coalition and includes
representatives from Madison area food pantries,
community gardens, school programs, companies
providing services to the elderly and people with
disabilities, individuals with interest in gardening
and others. CFGN is attempting to connect people and
organizations with similar goals and ideals, in order
to assist one another to maximize effectiveness and
build a sense of community.
*We were just about to start program updates when Rick
Brooks walked in with the T-shirts! They came out
very well in two colors of green, one really really
bright and the other a olive green. We decided to
sell them for at least $10 with checks made out to
Rick Brooks. ($10.55 with tax included)
Stephanie Zabler from Braeburn Courts volunteered to
host the July meeting at their facility and JoAnn Ripp
from Central Wisconsin Center would like to host for
the month of September.
CGFN is really proving that it is an essential network
and the participants are doing an outstanding job of
taking ownership!
*Focuscorp shared some of their tomatoes and
cauliflower that were donated by K&A Greenhouses.
Rick Brooks also had seed donated by a woman, but I
didn't catch her name. Thank you for sharing!!

We have a special treat this meeting! In addition to the informative and inspirational tour of Focuscorp,Susan Boltd will be talking about a community venture that that uses food as a way of reviving the past and bringing people together. Susan is currently working on an exciting project to reintroduce and celebrate Italian Heirloom varieties of vegetables. She will talk about her long range goals that include people creating taste memories to be passed on to future generations, and a harvest potluck. Susan will be giving away a few of heirloom plants and seeds to broadan community participation. It's a great way to learn about the history of the plant or seed you take home!
We also will have red Canas bulbs (I hope that is spelled correctly!) for you to take.
We hope to see you on Monday!!

Just a small thing.... my e-mail address isn't capitalized at all as you have it on the list. That's also true for the other Madison school people.

Community Food and Garden Network, May 5 2003, Olbrich Gardens, Minutes and Participation List
Hello and thank you for attending! We had a very good meeting with more personal discussion about the many programs and ideas that are happening with participants. This network is exceeding our goals with regards to interest and programming in gardening. One high point was that Focuscorps volunteered to host the next meeting. This is a great step towards sustainability and member ownership. It is a pleasure to work with such kind and devoted people!
Minutes: 3 delicious fruit pies was graciously donated by Monty’s Blue Plate, thanks for supporting the network!
Youth Flavor Festival – Rick Brooks and student, Amy Luther, shared with us their success from this event last month with an attendance of over 175 people. They received a grant of $1500 for youth service day to sponsor youth related activities aimed at building community on the south side. It was a free event featuring live music and home cooked food. Total cost was $500. With some of the remaining money, Rick and his students are willing to help sponsor a similar type of event. Contact Rick Brooks if interested.
Raised Bed Project – Ashleigh and Beth have been working on a project designed to make community gardens more accessible to people with disabilities and physical limitations. A few selected garden sites are Atwood, Truax, St.Paul, Quann, Gammon, and Troy. Some beds have already been constructed and are assigned to gardeners! Thus far, there has been a lot of interest in the community and they are hoping to expand the project and embark on a long-range plan for future accessibility at more garden sites. In order to best serve the community, they are currently in the process of creating a core committee to further help and design raised beds. Anyone interested, or willing to share their expertise should contact Beth or Ashleigh.
Focus Corp- Focus Corp is helping to create a new SHARE site! Contact them for further information. They have installed a few more raised beds for their clients to use and are hoping to construct a greenhouse for year round gardening. They have kindly offered to host the next meeting.
Composting Project- Serenity from CAC shared information on CAC’s composting projects. The main goal is really an emphasis on getting waste out of the waste stream. Initially, they will use any excess food from the program. The system will be similar to that of Willy St Co-op. Future plans will hopefully allow CAC to distribute compost to the public. Contact Serenity for more information.
Access to Independence- they have a lending library including adapted garden tools made for easier gardening. Contact them to check out their other items.
Promoting the network—there was talk about a benefit concert to raise $ for the Community Food and Garden Network. Some of the $ would be used for the raised bed gardening project. If you have any leads on low cost (free?) musicians or a place to hold it contact Beth or Ashleigh. Participants:

Hi everyone, I hope you can all attend the next CFGN meeting on Monday May 5th at Olbrich Gardens. Free Pie! Last weekend Ashleigh participated in a two day workshop at Growing Power. If you haven't heard of it, I highly reccomend a visit. We learned about bee keeping, aquaponics, worm composting, seed saving, renewable energy, and much much more. Best of all it was such a warm, comfortable environment with home cooked, well prepared meals. Will Allen, a staff member (director?) at Growing Power and very knowledgeable man, has offered to speak at one of our meetings! They encourage visitors, I would be willing to set up a field trip for anyone interested. We are helping to promote a plant sale they will be having in Madison. They have some of the healthiest plants I have ever seen. You won't want to miss it!

There is a free workshop on rain gardens that I wanted to let you know about. It is at Cafe Zoma on Saturday April 12th form 8:30- 10:30am. To register call 240-9424 or info@... It is sponsored by Agrecol. I think there will be more free workshops in May if you are unable to attend.
Please pass it along. I know there are some children garden leaders who expressed an interest in learning more on rain gardens.
