DES MOINES PARKS DEPARTMENT PRESENTS "ARTS AND THE GARDEN" CONFERENCE

Artists Karen Strohbeen and Bill Luchsinger highlight this year's School

and Community Gardening Conference "Arts and Garden" that will be held
on March 12th and March 13th, 2004.  The Des Moines Community Garden
Coalition's annual conference will inspire citizens to create artistic
public landscape projects.  Gardeners, artists, educators, and anyone
interested in public greenspaces including schools, community centers,
parks, libraries, and other not-for-profits will receive ideas and
resources to use public greenspaces for artistic expression.

The keynote presentation with Karen and Bill will be March 12th, from 7
- 8:30 pm.  Co-executive producers of the acclaimed PBS gardening
series, "The Perennial Gardener", Karen and Bill use their garden as an
art studio as they play with colors, forms and textures.  They'll share
their thoughts on making art outdoors.

During the day on Friday, March 12th, the Conference kicks off with a
grantwriting workshop for community groups integrating art into their
garden followed by a workshop on art and gardening activities for
children in Grades K - 6.

On Saturday, March 13th, the Conference continues with art and the
landscape examples and ideas presented by Tom Dunbar of Dunbar/Jones
landscape architect firm and continues with breakout workshops featuring

garden photography, gardens and literary arts, art in a children's
garden and the how-to's of organizing a community based art project for
a public greenspace.

Lunch on March 13th will demonstrate the art of cooking food from the
garden.    Dine on gastronomical works of art from local chefs and enjoy

hands on how-to demonstrations of garden art including mosaic gazing
balls, twig and vine art, plant-based dyes and fibers, and copper pipe
trellises.  Following lunch, storyteller Maureen Korte will charm us
with a story inspired by nature.

All sessions will take place at the Des Moines Botanical Center,  909
Robert D. Ray Drive, Des Moines IA  50316.  Contact
