Beth,
You might try contacting Lauren Perry Brown at the Madison Urban Ministry. Good Luck!! It sounds like a great idea.

As some of you may already know, my final weeks as a
VISTA for the community garden program at CAC are
approaching. As I begin to look ahead, I am begining
to brainstorm creative ways to stay involved with some
of the projects I have been involved in (and get paid
a few dollars!). One feasible way of achieving this is
grant writing...and my first attempt proved to be a
success! Earlier this month I received funding from
the CCUE (Creative Communities Utilize
Everyone)mini-grant to promote schoolyard gardening.
I have come across another grant that may or may not
be a big leap for me to try for. Although, ff I
learned one lesson this year, its that it can NEVER
hurt to try, and that there is nothing really to lose,
only the possibility to gain.
Have any of you heard of the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation and the faith in action grant? The
following is a brief description and more information
can be found on www.rwjf.org/index.jsp
"This program was founded on the ideal of community
volunteerism: of neighbors helping neighbors. With
more Americans living longer lives, many of us face
the challenge of caring for a family member, neighbor,
or friend who suffers from arthritis, diabetes,
cancer, Alzheimer's, AIDS, or other long-term health
conditions."
There are several projects in Madison that received
funding from the RWJ grant that focus on helping
people with the basics- e.g. grocery shopping, medical
appointments. How about including gardening to the
list? We all know the benefits of gardening and its
potential to bring people together. What are your
thoughts?
One required and essential component to the grant is
to work with at least 3 faith based groups, whether
its with a church, synagouge, Buddhist temple. Ideally
it would consist of and represent a diverse set of
cultures and religions. Do you know of any groups
that might be interested?
I would appreciate any feedback you might be willing
to give or contacts for interested groups.
Thanks!
Beth
