Friends of Troy Gardens Seeks Executive Director! (PLEASE FORWARD)
Friends of Troy Gardens (FTG), a nationally respected and innovative nonprofit organization, seeks an experienced, skilled, and dedicated Executive Director. FTG, in partnership with Madison Area Community Land Trust (MACLT) and Urban Open Space Foundation, manages twenty-six acres of land on which is integrated community gardens, an organic farm, and restored prairie and woodlands. An adjacent five acres, also owned by MACLT, contains mixed-income green-built housing. The ED will work with staff, directors, and partners to assure that the agency meets its goals, which are to become an economically stable and financially sustainable organization with a diverse income stream, continuity in leadership and an effective board and staff; develop and steward the land in a sustainable manner; increase food security for residents of Madison's Northside; develop educational programs on nature, gardening, nutrition and the environment; engage numerous community organizations and educational institutions in creating a "learning community" around the land; and create an aesthetically pleasing, accessible, natural areas resource that will be available in perpetuity for widespread community use.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will lead approximately five administrative and program staff; manage budgeting and fundraising; communicate with multiple constituencies; and be responsible for overall coordination and administration of all FTG activities. Applicants should have several years of experience in managing an organization of similar or greater complexity. Salary will be commensurate with experience. College degree preferred but not necessary. Position Description
The ED of the FTG reports to the board of directors and is responsible to the board as a whole.
The ED provides leadership in the achievement of the mission of FTG, including the formulation and implementation of strategies and goals. Duties include preparation and management of the agency budget, as adopted by the board, and oversight of the delivery of all programs. The ED also oversees the planning and implementation of all fundraising activities for the agency, identifying resources and approaching donors, and is responsible to make sure that the agency's revenue goals are met each year. The ED attends to many constituencies, such as board, staff, members, volunteers, donors, gardeners, partner organizations, and others. Duties include representation of the agency to these groups and to the public. The ED staffs all board committees and attends selected committee meetings.
The ED manages all human resources and bears final responsibility for all hiring decisions. The ED provides a supportive setting in which staff can be successful and is responsible for general supervision of senior staff, who supervise their subordinates and take the lead in their hiring.
Skills required of the ED include effective, consultative organizational management, diligent financial management, effective grant writing, responsive communications, effective use of the English language, and a demonstrated caring for the land and the stewardship mission of the agency.
