Subject: ACTION ITEMS re: MMSD Food Policy
Dear Farm to School Supporters:
The Madison Metropolitan School District has released a Draft Food Policy for
the district and we need your help to influence how our schools model healthy
eating choices for our children!
The district is now accepting public comment via an online survey (both the
proposed policy and the survey are at http://mmsd.org/topics/food/).
Wisconsin Homegrown Lunch has been very interested in the development of this
policy as it provides a wonderful opportunity to affect the food culture of our
schools in positive ways. While there are some good policies put forth in this
draft, we have some serious concerns with the lack of attention given to the
meals served by the MMSD Food Service as well as a number of other items.
ACTION ITEMS:
1. Please sign on to our letter.
Attached is a sign-on letter we will send to all MMSD School Board members by
April 24. If you would like your name added please send Doug Wubben an email
(dwubben@...) by April 19th stating such, along with how you would like to
be identified (i.e. parent, teacher, student, principal, physician, name of
organization, etc..)
2. Respond to the MMSD's online Food Policy Survey at:
http://mmsd.org/topics/food/ <http://mmsd.org/topics/food/> .
This is the official tool MMSD is using to seek public input. Attached are
responses that WI Homegrown Lunch have put together to help inform your position
as you respond to the survey.
3. Attend the May 1 MMSD School Board meeting.
Monday, May 1, the MMSD School Board will be hearing comment on the Food Policy.
5:30pm, McDaniels Auditorium, Doyle Administration Building (545 W. Dayton St.)
4. Share this with your school communities and others interested in the quality
of school food.

Thank you!
-Miriam
P.S. We'd appreciate having an idea of how many of our contacts are responding
to the MMSD on-line survey. Please let Doug know if you do!
