Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to participate in a week-long summer course
entitled "Growing Gardens, Growing Minds" June 19 - 24, 2006.
The focus will be to share ideas about how we can create engaging school
gardens and integrate them into the curriculum across disciplines and
grade levels.
The aim of our week together will be to enjoy outdoor learning ourselves
in a variety of gardens in the Madison area in order to inspire our work
with our students and youth. It will be a lot of fun. We'll be outside all
week.
This class is being offered to teachers for a FREE continuing education
graduate credit through the UW Madison Wisconsin Teacher Enhancement
Program (WisTEP). Other community members, activists, and gardening
professionals are encouraged to audit as participants.
Specific topics will include:
Curriculum and lesson development
Developmentally appropriate gardening activities
Service learning in the garden
Building community in the school garden
Outdoor classroom design considerations
Organic soil mix recipes and preparation
School gardening's effects on the nutrition environment
Plant variety recommendations appropriate for school programs
