Community Gardens Bike Tour
Come explore the bounty and beauty of Madison’s community gardens.
Join Mayor Dave Cieslewicz
for a bike tour of the largest and the newest community gardens in town!
September 13, 2003
9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Tour three of Madison's Community Gardens:
Quann Community Garden near the Alliant Energy Center in South Madison
Newest & Fastest-Growing Community Garden in Madison! Quann was created in 2002, doubled in size this year, and now has 82 gardening families.
Eagle Heights Community Garden on the campus of UW-Madison
Largest and Most Diverse Community Garden in the Midwest! 427 families garden at Eagle Heights, from almost 50 different countries. Some say that it's the largest community garden in the U.S.
Sheboygan Community Garden at the Hill Farms State DOT Building
A Green Place for Apartment-Dwellers -- Human Scale Among the Highrises! Sheboygan gardeners have been growing on a hilltop on the near west side for 15 years; 39 families garden there.
The tour will begin at 9:00 at Quann Community Garden, and maps of the route will be distributed then. Quann Garden is in Quann Park, behind the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum, at the intersection of Bram and Koster Streets, where the bike path meets Bram Street.
Gardeners will lead tours of these three big, bountiful and diverse community gardens. Families and individuals are invited to bike the route at a moderate pace with Madison's Mayor. We will begin the ride with a safety refresher from staff of the Bicycle Federation, and they will provide an informal safety escort during the ride. We plan to offer bus transportation so that the tour is accessible for all. Reserve a spot on the bus by calling Janet Parker at 246-4730 ext. 218.
The Community Gardens Division of Community Action Coalition for South Central WI, Inc. & the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin are co-sponsors of this event.
