“Eating Well, Being Well” is the theme for the sixth annual Food for Thought Recipe Contest, a summer competition organized by REAP Food Group of Madison. This year, organizers are on the look-out for healthful recipes that feature regional ingredients and seasonal cooking.

The grand prize, sponsored by RP’s Pasta of Madison, is a three-day trip for two to San Francisco; other prizes include meals at fine restaurants, hotel getaways, shopping sprees, cookbooks, and cooking classes.

Contestants may submit recipes in the following categories: Pasta-bilities, Vibrant Vegetables, Power Proteins, and Delectable Desserts. There’s also a Kids category for contestants age 14 and under. “The contest isn’t about fads or diets such as low-fat or low-carbs, “ says contest committee member Carole Blemker. “It’s about the healthfulness of real foods, whole foods, foods that come from close by and aren’t overly packaged or processed.”

The grand prize package includes air fare, lodging and a gourmet dinner at the trattoria-style Knob Hill Cafe, described as “a real San Francisco gem with fantastic pasta dishes” by Peter Robertson, president of RP’s Pasta. He is donating the trip in honor of his business’s tenth anniversary: “The contest encourages healthful eating habits and a sustainable food system. I think supporting that is a great way to celebrate,” he says.

The recipe contest is a preview event for Madison’s Food for Thought Festival, the annual celebration of food and sustainability held this year on September 17 off the Capitol Square on Wisconsin Avenue.

Entries are due August 19th.

For contest entry forms or more information, visit www.reapfoodgroup.org or call (608) 244-4876.
