Ashleigh, Dawn and CFGN friends,

Here's a little news.  Largely because of my work with the Madison Home Gardening Project, Community Food and Gardening Network, Oaksong, "Got Dirt," etc. I have been selected "Garden Crusader" by the Gardener's Supply Company in Vermont, with a little cash and merchandise award.  I'd like to contribute $500 in real money and $500 worth of gardening supplies and equipment to CAC for the Community Food and Gardening Network (consider it a "challenge grant" to stimulate funding for next year).  So maybe that will help with the conference a bit, too.

Sounds like the plans for the conference are moving along.  I'll be pretty occupied with Wisconsin SustainAbility Fair preparation so I won't be able to help much, but let me know if there's anything I can do.

One final note:  I talked with the School of Engineering about the project with the mobile greenhouse for Focus Corps.  He encouraged me to have Katherine Murray submit an application for students to take on the project.  I think it's worth trying to get some other grant support, too, especially if the bus is fueled by vegetable oil!

Rick

P.S. A few comments below regarding the  Kids Gardening and Nutrition Conference

What-

-         The purpose of the conference would be to continue growing and strengthening in school, community and daycare gardens for children of all ages, and network gardens and garden leaders with area resources.

-         Our audience will be Madison area  Dane County garden leaders and young gardeners

-         We would like the youngsters to be involved by presenting on their gardens and helping to cook a meal  Great idea!

-         We would like to show the whole gardening cycle from funding-building-curriculum-nutrition .

When-

-         We would like to have this conference in early October, possibly all day on a Saturday . Sounds good.

How-

-         We would like to invite as collaborators; Wisconsin Homegrown Lunch Program, UW- Nutrition Experts, experienced teachers, kids to present their garden programs  (really important) , Amy Mienen, FEEDS project, Troy Community Garden, Madison Metro School District, Rick Brooks

-         We will need some funds, possible grants that focus on gardening and nutrition.  We are not sure how much

-         We may need to charge a small fee for attendance; hopefully this will be under $20.

Think about promoting it at the Food for Thought Festival, through the CIAS folks and F.H. King at the UW.

Try to figure out ways to get some community gardeners to come--maybe especially some older gardeners.

Where-

-         We could possibly have the conference at Bayview, the facility has two large rooms, a kitchen, garden and games and toys for youngsters

-         We expect anywhere from 10-40 people for this event   Go for 40! Get Mark Voss's teachers involved.

Questions-

-Who else would like to be involved in the planning of this conference?

- Is it possible to get children from the garden programs to attend?

- Which Sat. would work better for everyone, the 8th or the 15th?

- Does anyone have any funds available for a conference like this?
