Exploring Mendota’s Indian Mounds

Southern Wisconsin was the center of Indian mound-building culture, and Dane County is especially rich in the earthenwork constructions of the first Americans. Several of the mounds, including two remarkable bird effigies, two panthers, two bears, and a deer, are located on the grounds of Mendota Mental Health Institute.
