Seeds needed for a community art project, Wisconsin Youth Company   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #33 of 619 |
Hello -
I am the coordinator for Celebrating Youth!, a large youth arts and performance event held at Monona Terrace each year in November. This year, the event is on November 16th - the International Day for Tolerance. www.celebratingyouth.org has more info.

As part of the event, we are creating a seed mosaic project for people to work on that day. It depicts a map of Wisconsin with ribbons of color coming into the Madison area. What I'm hoping to do is to collect seeds from community members which will be used to represent various cultures and countries that kids and families might be from. Kids will be able to put seeds on a section representing the cultures/countries their family is from, or that they identify with.

This is all tied in with a program produced by the Wisconsin Educational Communication's Board called Cultural Horizons - a 10-part video series featuring kids interviewing and visiting other kids all over Wisconsin about their heritage and exploring the concept of culture. This project ties into part 3 in the series where they visit the Eagle Heights Community Gardens and visit a Hispanic community center in Milwaukee where the kids are making murals. http://www.ecb.org/culture/videos.htm

So - I would like to collect seeds from Madison Community garden projects to use for the mosaic, which will be created at the event on November 16th. I would like to have seeds that are from a vegetable that is particularly associated with a culture that is unique and represented in your particular garden, if that's possible. (example: seeds from a particular gourd grown by Hmong farmers to represent people who are of Hmong descent.)

I will be happy to come and get the seeds in the fall, if you will be willing to save and dry them. Please let me know if your group would like to help with this. All organizations who contribute seeds will be acknowledged at the event.

Please contact me if you have questions and pass the word along if you know other groups who might be interested in participating. Thank you!
