Gardening can provide peace of mind as well as a season of fresh, delicious vegetables and beautiful flowers. There’s no better way to put the winter behind you than to get out in a garden as early as possible. This is a good class if you are just learning to garden. We’ll get you started on preparing your soil and garden beds, choosing what vegetables to plant when, and defending your crops against pests. A few different methods of gardening will be explained using hands-on demonstrations, with an emphasis on organic gardening with as little effort as possible. Getting Them Off To A Good Start – Best Practices for Planting Your Garden
Date: Saturday, May 21st, 9 am - Noon
Location: Troy Community Farm
Instructor: Claire Strader, Troy Community Farm Manager

Plants are resilient. They can stand up to much of the rough treatment we dish out to them. But our gardens are always more productive and more beautiful when we give our plants just what they need. We will start this class with a discussion of which crops do best when seeded directly into the garden and which do best when grown from starts. We will discuss soil preparation for direct seeding and transplanting, good seeding and transplanting techniques, good timing for these tasks, and optimal crop spacing. Finally we will put it all this information to use planting a flower garden at the farm. Everyone will get a chance to get their hands dirty and practice what they have learned. Participants will receive a list of over 50 vegetables and flowers and their growing requirements, and will be able to take left over starts home for their own gardens.
