Hello ladies!!
As a former intern at Casa de Nacimiento, I've talked with a number
of people about my experience. I know there are a lot of students who are
struggling to find a preceptor or even to just find a way to finish their
clinicals, and so just want to suggest that Casa is another option for
you. You don't have to have any previous experience to be accepted as an
intern- in fact, Casa has students who see their very first birth there,
and then others who are already CPMs go to enrich their growing birth
experience. They have women (to include doulas) go who are trying to
decide if they even want to pursue midwifery....Casa serves students
through many different levels in one's training. Check out this to hear a
former student's perspective:
http://www.casamidwifery.com/internexperience.html
Casa de Nacimiento is currently doing 40-60 births a month. Due to
being short on interns for the months of April and May, Linda has decided
to offer a discount for people who can come with little notice- $500 off
the regular listed price (http://www.casamidwifery.com/internpg2.html ).
Minimum stay is 1 month up to 3 months, and the offer is only valid for
people starting their internship in the months of April or May. If you
have questions, call Dani at 915-533-4931.

Melody, CPM

Hello Jami
> I was wondering several things.
> First what has your training as a DEM been?
I did volunteer work for a short time at the big LA
County Hospital, and spent a month at "Casa de Naciemento"
in El Paso, Texas, and for a few births, I apprenticed with a
Tijuana Midwife. After that, I just said "I can do this", and started
doing births.
> Are you certified?
No.
> How long have you been practicing?
I have been actively attending births for 4 years.
I ONLY attend home births, and I have attended
more then 220. I have attended 2 sets
of twins, 5 breeches, and I don't remember how
many VBAC's.
> Do you practice in hospitals?
No. I do not care for the Hospitals way of doing things.
Nothing against you, or your way of practicing, but home
births, and the type of moms who choose this are a different
breed.
> I thought I have heard that in Calf. Midwives are regulated and
> licensed, does that permit you to practice in a hospital?
I am a DEM, so I LEGALLY cannot attend ANY births in California.
> And do you live in Mexico or Calf.
I live in Southern California.
> ? Do you practice in both places?
I ONLY do births in Tijuana, Mexico
> What is your fee structure like for those who live south of the border? Do you
> take chickens as payments for services (LOL ** Joke)?
Almost! Sometimes, the really poor moms will make me a nice meal
after the birth. This makes me feel sad, as I know that I am
eating food that their children would have eaten. Most of the time, I
will tell the mom that I don't have time, but the real reason is that
I know that the family will have to get by on less food for the next week
if I except their invitation for dinner with them.
I charge $500 Pesos ($50 US), so I must keep my costs down.
I do Prenatal care, and births for the love of it, and to help bring the
"Midwifery and home birth option" to the poor moms that I serve.
Jerry
Greetings Jerry,
On behalf of the group I welcome you! I was wondering several things.
First what has your training as a DEM been? Are you certified? How
long have you been practicing? Do you practice in hospitals? I
thought I have heard that in Calf. Midwives are regulated and
licensed, does that permit you to practice in a hospital? And do you
live in Mexico or Calf. ? Do you practice in both places? What is
your fee structure like for those who live south of the border? Do
you take chickens as payments for services (LOL ** Joke)?
Peace,
Have a Blessed Day,
Jami

Childbirth professionals and families can offer nurses a Certificate
of Commendation for providing mother-friendly nursing care.
Silver Spring, MD, January 13, 2003- ANACS is a nonprofit
organization representing nurses providing maternity care. Many
maternity care nurses advocate for change in current maternity care
practices. ANACS supports the Coalition for Improving Maternity
Services (CIMS) Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) and in
close association with CIMS, has created Mother-Friendly Nurse
Recognition. Maternity nurses who practice mother-friendly maternity
nursing based upon the MFCI "gold standard" are eligible for Mother-
Friendly Nurse Recognition. Applications are currently being
accepted.
A letter of recommendation from a colleague, parent, or childbirth
advocate is a part of the recognition process. Childbirth educators,
doulas, and birthing mothers and their significant others may
individually offer a nurse who has provided exemplary care a
Certificate of Commendation. This certificate is a way of letting the
nurse know that you feel her care is mother-friendly. The nurse may,
if she so desires, use this certificate as one step in the official
recognition process or she may just accept it as a much-needed
acknowledgement of a job well done.
ANACS invites childbirth professionals to assist us in letting
parents know about this Certificate of Commendation and we hope that
you will help us honor nurses by presenting your own on our behalf so
that nurses can know how appreciated their mother-friendly care is.
We do hope that nurses will join ANACS and apply for the official
recognition status because we are hoping to raise awareness for
mother-friendly issues as well as raise the awareness of the need for
more mother-friendly care in maternity nursing. ANACS hopes for
increased membership so that nurses with mother-friendly voices can
find strength in numbers and help to create mechanisms for maternity
service changes.
To request a copy of the Certificate of Commendation word document be
emailed to you please write us at MFNR@... and tell us how you
plan to disseminate this information and we will email you an
attachment with the Commendation.doc. For Information Contact:

Mother- Friendly Nurse Recognition: Honoring the nurses who make it
their duty to provide the best possible maternity care even in
institutions where great challenges exist.
Silver Spring, MD, January 13, 2003- ANACS is a nonprofit
organization representing nurses providing maternity care. Many
maternity care nurses advocate for change in current maternity care
practices. ANACS supports the http://www.motherfriendly.org
Coalition for Improving Maternity Services(CIMS)
http://www.motherfriendly.org/MFCI/Mother Friendly Childbirth
Initiative(MFCI) and in close association with CIMS, has created
Mother-Friendly Nurse Recognition. Maternity nurses who practice
mother-friendly maternity nursing based upon the MFCI "gold standard"
are eligible for recognition. Applications are currently being
accepted.
Women today are often faced with many challenges when giving birth.
Some of them spend many hours in childbirth education classes, or
with doulas, midwives, and physicians, learning how they can manage
their birth and trust their inner wisdom only to arrive at the
hospital and learn their birth is not normal but a pathological
crisis waiting to happen. Our own society has created much research
that supports the "normalcy" of birth; Modern maternity care often
ignores research that provides scientific evidence about the use and
misuse of interventions. Mother-friendly maternity nurses serve as
liaisons to better maternity care through implementation of evidence
based care.
The Mother-Friendly Recognized nurse meets specific criteria; her
evidence based care must incorporate the MFCI and remain infused with
current best practices by means of attendance at mother-friendly
continued education. A letter of recommendation from a colleague,
parent, or childbirth advocate is submitted and the nurse must write
an essay, which conveys her mother-friendly philosophy. A panel of
childbirth professionals then reviews the application
http://www.anacs.org/downloads/Application_MFNR.pdf before
recognition is awarded. Once awarded the nurse receives a
certificate and a pin to proudly display Mother-Friendly Nurse
Recognition.
Because of this type of recognition and identification women will be
able to identify mother-friendly nurses. Women desire a nurse that
will support their birth plans, attempt to diminish unnecessary
interventions, safeguard the highest family centered care, and
possess greater skills in comfort measures for labor and
breastfeeding support. Now women will be able to request and
recognize Mother-Friendly Nurses.

A NO-WAITING HIV TEST
If you have been putting off having an HIV test, now is a good time
to get checked out, since you can avoid the grueling wait for the
results. The FDA has just approved a 20-minute version of an HIV
test, called OraQuick, which will let individuals know right away if
they are infected. Before, HIV tests took two weeks to determine
whether someone was HIV-positive or -negative, and thousands of those
tested never called back to get the news. OraQuick requires a simple
needle prick and is almost 100% accurate. Experts say it should come
in handy in hospitals when women give birth; babies born to infected
mothers would be able to get immediate treatment that may spare them
from the disease.

CNN, November 7, 2002
*** This seems to be a very great thing for screening I hope they
confirm any positive results as they do today with a second more
costly test and that this never becomes an over the counter method of
testing like home pregnancy tests, as anyone who tests positive needs
counseling for depression and treatment.
Dear OFOM Supporters,
I am writing to you today to solicit your help! As you know, The
Ohio Friends of Midwives is a grass-roots, consumer-based, non-profit
organization, dedicated to supporting and promoting midwifery and the
Midwives Model of Care (MMOC) as quality health care options for Ohio
women and their families. The Ohio Friends of Midwives hopes to
assure that your daughters and grand daughters have access to
midwifery care. Ohio currently sits in a precarious position.
Direct-entry midwifery is not currently regulated by the state; a
midwife has recently been prosecuted and is currently incarcerated
for practicing standard midwifery care; and, a bill has been on hold
in the Ohio House of Representatives since last spring. The
direction that the "midwifery train" takes is partially up to its
supporters.
Please volunteer to help OFOM in its continued plight to support and
promote midwifery. Because we are a grass-roots organization, we
rely on our members to take an active role in the organization.
Without your help to fill these volunteer positions, OFOM is at risk
of losing momentum! Please don't wait for someone else to carry the
ball! Get involved today! Volunteer to work collaboratively with

to work with the elements (earth air fire and water) and spend a week
with us in Antigua Guatemala next summer doing healing, personal
growth work as it relates to who we are as midwives. I will let you
