Mother- Friendly Nurse Recognition: Honoring the nurses who make it
their duty to provide the best possible maternity care even in
institutions where great challenges exist.
Silver Spring, MD, January 13, 2003- ANACS is a nonprofit
organization representing nurses providing maternity care. Many
maternity care nurses advocate for change in current maternity care
practices. ANACS supports the http://www.motherfriendly.org
Coalition for Improving Maternity Services(CIMS)
http://www.motherfriendly.org/MFCI/Mother Friendly Childbirth
Initiative(MFCI) and in close association with CIMS, has created
Mother-Friendly Nurse Recognition. Maternity nurses who practice
mother-friendly maternity nursing based upon the MFCI "gold standard"
are eligible for recognition. Applications are currently being
accepted.
Women today are often faced with many challenges when giving birth.
Some of them spend many hours in childbirth education classes, or
with doulas, midwives, and physicians, learning how they can manage
their birth and trust their inner wisdom only to arrive at the
hospital and learn their birth is not normal but a pathological
crisis waiting to happen. Our own society has created much research
that supports the "normalcy" of birth; Modern maternity care often
ignores research that provides scientific evidence about the use and
misuse of interventions. Mother-friendly maternity nurses serve as
liaisons to better maternity care through implementation of evidence
based care.
The Mother-Friendly Recognized nurse meets specific criteria; her
evidence based care must incorporate the MFCI and remain infused with
current best practices by means of attendance at mother-friendly
continued education. A letter of recommendation from a colleague,
parent, or childbirth advocate is submitted and the nurse must write
an essay, which conveys her mother-friendly philosophy. A panel of
childbirth professionals then reviews the application
http://www.anacs.org/downloads/Application_MFNR.pdf before
recognition is awarded. Once awarded the nurse receives a
certificate and a pin to proudly display Mother-Friendly Nurse
Recognition.
Because of this type of recognition and identification women will be
able to identify mother-friendly nurses. Women desire a nurse that
will support their birth plans, attempt to diminish unnecessary
interventions, safeguard the highest family centered care, and
possess greater skills in comfort measures for labor and
breastfeeding support. Now women will be able to request and
recognize Mother-Friendly Nurses.
