It is ignoring the medical establishment's model
of care, that implies childbirth is a medical
emergency that must be managed rather than watch and wait!
For midwives the tools of trade/art is massage, herbs
and emotional support. Midwives respect both their
clients (not patients) bodies and the families' spiritual
connection with their newborns. Medicine tends to focus upon
the DX rather than the condition, Midwifes focus on
the clients needs rather than the pathophysicalogical
condition of the birth. We know that birth is natural and
will progress normally with minimal assistance. We
recognize when the need for a medical intervention is
needed for a favorable outcome and when not to intervene
with nature!

We recognize that a baby is more
than the a offspring of the couple/family, they are
part of a greater whole of the universe! What we do
during there birth has long term effects upon them and
the rest of the human race. An example of this is the
impact Breastfeeding has upon "social adjustment" and a
sense of well-being! Many of our societies social paths
and anti-social behaviors (i.e. inmates) were not
breastfeed, this was determined with case history and survey
studies (I do not recall the name of the investigators or
the study titles), if you know them please send me
the names!

This is just one example where
medicine remains behind the times and the Midwifes Model
of Care recognizes the significance of birthing
practices! If you would like to add to this thread please do
so! This is your club too!

Peace,
Have a
Blessed Day,
Jami
