Support Responsible Sex Education Programs (As an HIV?AIDS Educatio   Message List

Greetings all,

I am a ARC Certified HIV/AIDS Community Education Instructor and I
feel this is an issue that we need to to take a stand on! In todays
world we can not afford to stick our heads in the ground and pray our
children will know about the dangers of UNPROTECTED sex. It is not to
insure birth control but to insure that our children will survive to
see thier offspring! It is a deadly world out there and these
programs do much more than educate the kid on how babies are made and
such. They give them skills to think before they act in the heat of
the moment and live (if they are lucky) to regret that moment when
they had sex. AIDS and the virus HIV that cuases AIDS is real and it
is spreading in disproporitionate amounts to our children and females
in particulr, if you are of Latino ancestory the risk is even more
due to the Roman Catholic Churches stance which is to put there heads
in the sand and condeme those members of the church for PROTECTING
THEMSELVES from this and other STDS! I support teaching our youth
about the birds and the bees before they get stung by a killer bee!
Please take a moment and read and if you desire follow the link to
support the bill.

Please Support Responsible Sex Education Programs

In recent years, anti-choice members of Congress have increased
funding for abstinence-only education programs that withhold
information from teens that could prevent sexually transmitted
diseases and thousands of unintended pregnancies. President Bush's
budget proposal for the coming year would dramatically increase
funding for abstinence-only education, bringing the total funding
level for these programs to an unprecedented $135 million.
Rather than funding programs that withhold information from teens,
Congress should provide support for sex education that includes
responsible, age-appropriate and medically-accurate instruction
emphasizing the benefits of abstinence while also teaching about
contraception and disease-prevention methods. Currently, however, no
such federal program exists.

Pro-choice Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jim Greenwood (R-PA),
and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) have introduced the Family Life Education Act
to provide $100 million in annual funding to states to support
responsible sex education that includes information about both
abstinence and contraception.

Responsible sex education works. It teaches not only abstinence and
resistance skills, but also provides teens with information about
contraceptives and STD/HIV prevention so they can make responsible
decisions if and when they become sexually active. Abstinence-only
education, promoted by anti-choice activists and legislators, often
fails to provide information regarding pregnancy prevention and
STD/HIV prevention beyond simply urging teenagers to abstain from
sexual activity. In short, it fails to provide teens with the
information they need to responsibly protect their health and well-
being.

It is time to focus on programs that achieve the best results, that
is, on comprehensive, age and developmentally appropriate sex
education. The Family Life Education Act would accomplish that goal.
Please ask your Representative to cosponsor the bill.
