Ask Your Senators to Support Equity for Contraceptives
EPICC, the Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive
Coverage Act, would require private health insurance companies that
cover prescription drugs to cover contraceptives equally.
Women need access to basic health care - and that means that birth
control should be covered by insurance. The average woman who wants
two children will spend five years pregnant or trying to get pregnant
and nearly three decades trying to prevent pregnancy. Today, many
women are forced to pay hundreds of dollars a year for contraception
because their health plans don't cover it. We need a law to ensure
that women don't have to choose between household bills and their own
health care needs.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and a federal court have
ruled that it is sex discrimination when an employer provides
insurance coverage for preventive care and prescription drugs, but
excludes contraceptives. Congress should enact EPICC to ensure that
insurance coverage is fair to women and to end this long-standing
discrimination
