Is there a place for males like me?   Message List

"Many women, when choosing gyn or ob care, feel a strong preference
to have a woman as their care provider. When asked, they often say
that they feel that a "woman doctor" will be more understanding and
nurturing. The outcome of such choices varies. While some women may
bring a great of care and gentleness to their practices, they are
still trained in the same manner as male obstetricians. The same
constraints and prejudices pepper their practices, and this can be a
disappointing discovery to make. For many women, then, the answer was
not the sex of their care provider, but the type of care that they
were hoping to receive."

I really need to know if many women feel as this auther does about
the preferrence of clients to have a Female Provider. As a Male it
concerns me that these stereotypical bias and the following
discrimination occurs as a result of these statements. I think I am
just as nuturing and supportive as anyone else who has the philiosphy
of birthin babes is a natural, life event and usually not a medical
emergency! Maybe I am wrong thats why I have asked for your inout
here and please don't sugar coat it, state it like it is I respect
other peoples opinions and if I wanted it to be soft I would not have
asked. I would like to point out that the author did say that just
being a female does not make a better provider! So although many
women feel that gender matters it is revealed that in medicine it
does not, if I read the statement right?

I will say the site owner is a bit bias about how she protrays who a
Doula is, LOL! I think I would never meet those standards for her
training.
