About Midwifery
It was earlier this year that I discovered that several of my
ancestors were accused (and two hung) in Salem as witches (for more
info visit www.pearllakehist.com/witch). One of them is portrayed as
a midwife in some works. In some ways this year has been one of
serendipitous discoveries (like the witch connection) - many of those
have drawn me closer to midwifery. I wonder at times what it is that
makes our profession so unique - there seems to be an almost surreal
feeling to the experience.
This month I started teaching Sunday school with my good friend Greg.
He is an educator by trade and has been doing childrens' ministry for
years. As for me - I am more of a new age Episcopalian, drawing from
the Universe (and nature) my primary connection to my spirituality -
haven't been in a Sunday school class since grade school. We make a
great team in many ways - and the interaction has inspired me to
think more about the Biblical roots of midwifery - can they answer
some questions about the unique experience of our profession?
I first learned of the Biblical connection a few years back from a
poster at ACNM convention with a Bible quote on it: "The Midwives did
not as the King of Egypt commanded them to do, but saved the children
live." Cool poster - but what does it mean? It turns out that there
are two midwives, Shifra and Puah. The Israelites are being used as
slaves in Egypt. Despite the efforts to oppress them with heavy
manual labor, the people of Israel are increasing their number at an
astonishing rate. So the Pharaoh's plan to weaken the people is
backfiring; in fact, "the more they were oppressed, the more they
increased and spread out, so that the [Egyptians] came to dread the
Israelites" (Exodus 1: 12). In a desperate attempt to cut off this
astonishing capacity to multiply, Pharaoh approaches our two midwife
friends - who attend births of the Israelite women. The Pharaoh tells
them that all male babies must be killed. The midwives defy the order
(not the midwives!) and allow the children to live. When asked why
they have not followed the Pharaoh's orders, they explain that the
Israelite women give birth too rapidly - they are arriving after the
births - so they can't possibly obey the command. Because of this
they were rewarded (by God) with "houses" (And because the midwives
feared God He made for them houses). Some versions say, "gave them
families" instead of houses. Interestingly, Shiphrah and Puah's
descendants became families of priests and kings. WOW!
I see the connection with modern midwives being protectors of women's
health issues. I even see a connection with other mammals that
have "midwives" and how the primary role is to be sure the women
aren't bullied (by the males) during labor and birth - and to assist
with bonding/breastfeeding. What must have gone through the minds of
Shiphrah and Puah as they decided how to respond to the order? - and
they followed spiritual rather than political mandates. They knew - I
believe midwives have high intuition and can often read the spiritual
messages from the Universe/Higher Power. They were rewarded - or at
least their offspring were - with prominent families.
So, OK - then what happened in Salem to my great aunt, Rebecca Nurse?
She was a healer (perhaps a midwife) and tried hard to be a model of
Puritan values. How does her story fit the same spiritual laws as
Shiphrah and Puah's experience? Rebecca was rewarded with the hanging
tree and forever separated from her family.
Both were times when authority figures feared external cultures,
religions and beliefs enough to end lives. Both were times when the
focus was on seeing separateness from other humans - on judging
others harshly if they are "different" - rather than a focus on
connection with all humanity. (I also see a connection with our own
experience on 9/11.) So, perhaps that is the thread of commonality -
it is the Israelites who, perhaps, represent the "witches" (threats
to the values system) to the Egyptians. In order to put an end to the
threat, the midwives were ordered to murder the male babies. They
chose not to murder and Moses is saved. There were no
clear "midwives" (those who prevented the killings) in Salem - so the
hangings happened - at least for awhile. There were those who did see
the light from the earliest days of the witch-hunts and used their
political power to eventually stop the hangings - many were
Episcopalians, mind you.
To me, the bottom line message is that when we kill a person or a
people out of fear - or the need to control - we are acting in
opposition to the laws that rule the universe that say we are all
part of the same whole. What scares or threatens us about someone
external to our "ego" (or lower self) is usually something more about
our own dark side than theirs. When we are threatened - we humans
abuse, reject and murder. This works in opposition with the law that
we are all one Spirit; all people are have imperfections and all are
part of a perfect creation. In the Bible, the midwives respected this
law by not being threatened - either by the Israelites' ability to
propagate or by the Pharaoh. In Salem, witches (mostly women - some
healers - some men) were the threat that appeared to be propagating
out of control - they were x-communicated and hung on the command of
the Puritan church leaders.
The role of the midwife is present in either scenario - Strong enough
not to surrender our values even if it means taking a huge risk in
defying authority - Courageous enough to surrender to death without
confession in order to honor what we know in our soul is the truth. I
see the connection and I am proud to be a midwife.

Quotes About Midwives
"Working quickly and efficiently, Mama Chia - midwife, healer,
kahuna - again checked Mitsu's vital signs and prepared to turn the
baby. This might be a difficult birthing, but God willing and with
the help of the island spirits, she would save the mother and,
together, they would bring a new life into the world." - Dan Millman
in Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior
"Medieval midwifery was a combination of common sense, herbal
knowledge, and superstition, passed from woman to woman through oral
presentation and apprenticeship" - The Midwife's Apprentice by Cushman
"For thousands of years labor and delivery had been in the hands of
female midwives. Hypocrites, the father of the scientific approach
to medicine, did have some teachings about the management of
childbirth and the midwives regarded him as 'he-grandmother'.
Midwives continued to be in charge, seeking the advise, not the help,
of the physicians in difficult cases." Birth Days by Wirvin

possible future publication in our monthly "Women as Leaders"
feature. We value your contributions of quotes and short stories

Just for Fun: A Middle-Wife's Story
Betsy, a grammar-school teacher from Miami, remembers this Oscar-
worthy birth tableau from one of her students...
I've been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids
myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own
second-grade classroom a few years back.
When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few
sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and
experience a little public speaking. And it gives me a break and
some guaranteed entertainment.
Usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles,
model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I
never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want
to lug it to school and talk about it, they're welcome.
Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very out-going
kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a
pillow stuffed under her sweater. She holds up a snapshot of an
infant.
"This is Luke, my baby brother, and I'm going to tell you about his
birthday. First, Mommy and Daddy made him as a symbol of their love,
and then Daddy put a seed in my mother's stomach, and Luke grew in
there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord."
She's standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I'm trying not
to laugh and wishing I had a video camera rolling. The kids are
watching her in amazement.
"Then, about two Saturdays ago, my mother starts going, 'Oh, oh,
oh!' "Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. "She walked
around the house for, like an hour, "Oh, oh, oh!' " Now the kid is
doing this hysterical duck-walk, holding her back and groaning.
"My father called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she
doesn't have a sign on the car like the Domino's man. They got my
mother to lie down in bed like this." Erica lies down with her back
against the wall.
"And then, pop! My mother had this bag of water she kept in there in
case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the
bed, like psshhheew!" The kid has her legs spread and with her little
hands is miming water flowing way. It was too much!
"Then the middle wife starts going push, push, and breathe,
breathe. They start counting, but they never even got past ten. Then,
all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff
they said was from the play-center, so there must be a lot of stuff
inside there."
Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her
seat. I'm sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, if it's
show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder - just in case another Erica
comes along.
Annual Montrose, Colorado Healthcare Mini-Grant
Abundance is what the gift for Montrose (e.g., Montrose Mini Grant)
is all about every year. Abundance that comes through giving back.
In our culture, we often focus on scarcity that says "there is only
so much so we need to conserve it." Scarcity leads to power and
control tactics. If there is only so much of something, then everyone
feels a need to get into a position of control in order to survive.
It is a fear-driven approach. . . (For more information and

Dear Friend of ICAN:
Physicians, hospitals, birth centers, insurance companies, and health
regulatory agencies are no longer allowing a woman the right to
choose a VBAC where and with whom she desires. Despite recent media
attention declaring VBAC unsafe, a truthful examination of the
research indicates that VBAC is still safe when spontaneous labor is
allowed to proceed without induction or augmentation. The website of
the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) contains
information regarding the safety of VBAC and may be visited at
www.ican-online.org.
Sponsored by the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN), a
petition is being signed now at www.petitionpetition.com to Support
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) as a safe method of childbirth
and require childbirth professionals, hospitals and birth centers to
allow VBAC. By signing this petition, you believe that VBAC should
continue to be allowed as a safe option in childbirth where and with
whom the mother chooses. To sign the petition, which will be sent to
the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, American
Hospital Association, Aetna, Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Cigna, and
Kaiser Permanente, visit
http://www.petitionpetition.com/cgi/petition.cgi?id=4208 or to
www.ican-online.org and click on the petition link.
Please sign this petition now! Your support is vital to keep VBAC

Babycatcher
I'm a California (Berkeley) CNM, and I've written BABY CATCHER:
Chronicles of a Modern Midwife, a memoir that Scribner is
publishing. It concerns 15 years of home births and hospital births,
a lawsuit and its fallout, etc.
The book can at last be ordered, and by mid April, it'll be in
bookstores everywhere. Rosie Magazine is printing an excerpt in their
May issue, and two book clubs (Literary Guild and Doubleday) have
chosen BABY CATCHER as an alternate
selection.
To read the first chapter, open the website www.babycatcher.net and
click on Excerpt. Then sign my Guestbook, if you like.
I'll soon begin a national book tour. Keep track of the scheduled
appearances under Latest News on my website. Please pass this
information on to everyone in your email address book. Marketing only
to midwives and their clients is like preaching to the choir; to have
an impact, my book must reach the mainstream reading audience, so
please help spread the word.
Thanks...
Keep catching those babies, in the name of midwifery!
