One of the tenants of irrigation is you
want to be well hydrated when you start. I believe one of the main functions
of the colon is to remove water which is likely where your water is going.
Having the patient drink as much water as he can the hour before starting every
day may be helpful. I hope you are not literally “pumping” water
into him as opposed to a natural gravity flow. Not sure it is bad, I just have
not heard of that and would be concerned.

Subject: [colostomy] advice
needed: having irrigation problems
I am a caregiver for a 87 year old patient with a
colostomy. He irrigates every day (I do the
procedure) and I pump 1200 ccs of water into him and wait for it to come out.
Sometimes it
doesn't come out! Where does it go? And most importantly, what can I put in the
water, or
what kind of meducation/dietary suppliment can I give him that will SMOOTH thngs
along????
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!!
