Re: [colostomy] new member

I have had my permanent colostomy since April 05.
I have never heard of your "stinky" symptoms.
Have you tried irrigation?
It changed my life!
Now I don't have to worry because I control the output with irrigation every morning.

Jon

Subject: [colostomy] new member

Hi. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm CRK, a new member. Sorry
in advance for this being long. Figured I'd get it over with and put
it all out there. Responses are always welcomed as long as I'm on
this list and my email address is still good. So if you find this
years later, feel free to respond as though it's new.

I have a sigmoid colostomy since May '05. I have severe uterine
fibroids, endometriosis/ severe pelvic adhesions which led to rectal
scarring and ultimately a blockage. Initially they said my colostomy
was temporary and I'd eventually get a hysterectomy and a reversal,
but later they said there's nothing they can do because of the
adhesions.
I have a couple of weird problems and no help with doctors in county
system. Don't have access to a specialist and my anatomy is
unusual. When I ask the doctors questions they just say they don't
know. Thought maybe others with ostomies would have more insight or
could help me figure it out.
Wondering if I can get advice. Also am here to talk to others with
ostomies.
After my surgery, small amounts of stool drained from my rectum for
about 9 months. Now mucous drains (from rectum), mostly around time
of period. It was initially clear, but is now often yellow or
slightly blood tinged.
After changing my colostomy bag (cut to fit drainable pouch), my
stoma/intestines is/are sensitive and I have narrowed stools for up
to 3 days. It does all eventually come out, but the bag is always
dirty (doctors call dusky). This resolves gradually, however, I
never have consistantly large, single logs that drop to the bottom.
It's usually a couple days of narrow stools and a couple days of
moderately sized soft stools. Regardless of whether I wash the bag
out, keep the outside clean, etc. I usually stink by the 3rd day. But
if I don't wait until the 4th day my stoma or intestines don't relax
enough for a good output. So I have to be stinky a couple days.
I'm allergic to anything scented, so perfume and scented deoderants
are out of the questions.
Any one ever heard of any thing like any of my problems, have any
educated or experienced guesses or advice?
