Jon:
I took fiber supplements every day until my sigmoid colectomy. I
found it to be unnecessary now, mostly due to significant changes in
my diet, but I do ingest a small dose 2-3 times per week anyway.
I haven't experienced any constipation yet. Your doctor should have
given you some advice about stool softeners and use of laxatives. If
you do try a fiber supplement, I would reccommend Konsyl, it's 100%
Psillium fiber. I've had problems with other brands, but this brand
worked very well.
You should check online, there is a site just for ostomy patients
that has a lot of great advice too. http://www.uoaa.org/
Hope this helps. Good luck.
