Dear Kim
I came out of hospital yesterday (6th August) after a colostomy reversal on 26 July. It was not nearly as bad as I had expected it to be.
The surgeon cut through the scar from the original colostomy so there is no additional scarring at that site. In addition, I have a 2.5" horizontal scar where the stoma (1" round) used to be. It may sound gruesome but I took a photo of the scars (complete with staples) 2 days after surgery and I would be happy to send you the picture if you would email me privately. Of course, it all looks a lot better now but even then I was surprised at how neat the job was despite the bit of bruising and swelling I had.
Good luck with your clinical.
Peter

Subject: [colostomy] what to expect
Hi everyone, I am a nursing student going to do a clinical on a
colostomy reversal. What can I expect to see? I have looked all over my
textbook and the net but have been unable to find much about this. I
know that my patient is a young male that had a colostomy done to allow
a rectal fistula to heal. He is now having the reversal done and I
will be seeing him the day of his surgery. I am interested in know
about what incisions there will be ect. I just want to be prepared.
thanks,
KS
