Hi Sara, I'm a senior guy who has had a colostomy for 11-1/2 years. I have
belonged to a very worthwhile support group, a local chapter of the United
Ostomy Association and have received lots of help, not to mention occasional
free samples, talks and advice from ostomy doctors and mfrs. reps., and a
renewed subscription to the best mag. for ostomates, the Ostomy Quarterly (with
my annually paid dues to the U.O.A. = $27.50.) You should check that out if you
have a chapter near you! (Maybe contact your local hospital to find
one.).................. To respond to you main question re constipation : You
can never ever get that condition with either type of ostomy because you will
not have any spinchter muscles to hold back your waste. If you get a blockage
or kinking in your intestines, you will have what seems to be constipation,
which if it lasts more than one day, you won't be able to keep any food down,
and you better get to your local E.R. right away. ........... Don't hesit
ate to contact me for any info, which I have access to both from lots of
personal experiences and from my support group education. Lots of luck.
.............Ken from N.J.
