Julie,
There are many support groups for such a purpose as yours. I recommend you contact Hollister 1-800-323-4060. This is a colostomy product company and can provide a toll free number to a national support group in your area.
The experiences I have had at first was doubt, confusion, frustration, and the feeling that I am some how, different. This is natural, however, you tell your mom from me she will be ok! It is not all that bad. The colostomy and it's associated products will become a habit and she will find it is no big deal. You may correspond directly with me if so desired by E-Mail oldsod@....
Kind Regards

some advice and help.
My 70 year old mother had to have a colostomy last week and is still
recovering from the surgery, but I wanted to know if there is anyone
that could give me and my family some information as to the
emotional effects to look for , or a web sight that would offer
information and support to the family members along with the patient.
We were told that a colostomy nurse will be educating us with all of
this but I wanted to try to get a "heads-up" on some things.
My mom is a strong woman, but I know this has been traumatic to her,
because prior to this surgery, there was nothing "major" wrong.
She is my insiration in life and i want to help her all I can and
would appreciate any advice or ideas any of you could offer.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Julie
