Questions from a patient about HNPCC
JB, who is currently 32 years of age and has two children—both boys, ages 9 and 11—seeks genetic counseling about colon cancer. The family history is positive for colon cancer: her father died of colon cancer at age 55 years; an older sister developed cancer of the right colon at age 44 years and is currently dying of the disease; and, her paternal grandmother and great aunt reportedly died of colon cancer in their early 50s. Her sister at the time of diagnosis of colon cancer was found to have only two adenomas; she had been tested as part of a research study, and a gene mutation had been identified.
